Travelling from KL to Koh samui

Hi,

Me and 2 friends are planning a new year Thailand and Malaysia adventure! We fly in to KL on 28th Dec and were planning on spending a couple of days there before heading to Koh Samui for new years.

However getting a bit worried re: southern thailand. As 3 girls will we be safe getting train/bus to Surat Thani or would we be better to fly? Also- thinking we may need to pre-book this transport but don't know how to do it from the Uk....

Any help would be much appreciated!

not at dangerous to get there surface, but maybe you might want to consider flying either expensively - and direct - with Beejaya Airways, who only fly 3 times a week. Samui will be very busy then as I'm sure you will have realised.

Trains Hat Yai-Surathani may very well be booked solid by the time you get there.

it's getting late now even to book online - Christmas is only a month away - but go to maninseat61.com for details how to book your KL-Hat Yai ticket online. The Hat-Yai- Surathani leg, you basically can't book online, maybe you should get a bus from there. Everything will be busy, chock a block, high season. I met a guy in Hat Yai just after Christmas last year who was unable to get a plane or train up to Bangkok on the days he wanted, December 29th/30th.

You might look into Firefly Air .... They fly from Penang to Samui. I checked for the 30th. It comes to 370 MYR, so about 3500 baht. It is a little pricey, but definitely an option. As callippo points out, this is a very busy time of year.

Easy enough to go by bus too. There are comfortable overnight buses to Thailand (Hat Yai) which leave Pudaraya bus station in KL from 9.30pm onwards, there are 2-3 every night. You cross the border when it opens about 6am and the bus takes you through to Hat Yai where the bus terminates.

From there you can then purchase an onward ticket to Surat Thani, either by heading to the bus station, or as part of a bus/boat package to Samui from one of the many travel agents in Hat Yai. You'll be on the island late afternoon.
