China Visa Requirements

Hi,
I know this information is probably on here somewhere already, but I couldn't find it, sorry.
I have a British passport and am planning to enter China from Japan on the ferry into Shanghai, we will then leave China to go into Vietnam and re-enter China from Laos. Then we plan to get trains to Beijing, and once in Beijing get the Trans-Mongolian express home. I know that I will need to get a double-entry visa for the time we intend to spend in China, but I have heard that a return ticket is a requirement for getting a visa, which we won't have until we enter China. Can someone tell me if it will be possible for me to get a Visa. (Also I'm intending to get the visa when I'm in Japan)

Thanks

You heard wrong.

No need for return tickets. I presume you're not on a weird passport like Lebanon or something.
Cheers!

Not sure when you are traveling but there is only one train per week from Beijing to UB. Tickets for international trains cannot be bought at the train station. Since you need to use CITS or a travel agency, you might as well order it in advance. Try contacting CITS, www.cits.net or Richard Tian of Ocean Travel, whose email is oceantravelcn@yahoo.com.cn or richards@public3.bta.net.cn or Bill Wang of EaseTravel at easetravel@hotmail.com or bill@easetravel.com. Reportedly these companies are quite reliable about obtaining the tickets at a fair price and delivering them during the day to your hostel or hotel in Beijing. Be sure to add them to your address book so that your spam filter does not "Eat" their responses.

You should be able to get a double entry visa with two entries of 30-60 days per entry good for a period of 6 months. To get the 60 days, try submitting an itinerary that shows travel taking 50 days and do NOT mention Tibet or Western China.

Since I have taken the time to answer your question, it would be nice if you took the time to respond as to whether the information was helpful.

If you don't get a double-entry visa, it's very very easy (and cheap) to get another single-entry visa in Vientiane
