Khao Lak in May

Hi,

My wife and I and our by then 1 year old will be going to Thailand for a wedding.

My 70 yo parents will be coming with us. We are flying into Phuket where we will be picked up by my brother to go to Mukdara Resort in Khao Lak where the wedding will take place. We plan to stay there for 7 days.

My question is we would like to stay in Thailand for another 3-4 days minimum. Can anyone give us some suggestions of somewhere that would be good to go for the 3-4 days before going to Mukdara Resort in Khao Lak. Maybe somewhere around Phuket or somewhere between Phuket and Khao Lak? Mum doesn't have great mobility so this would be a consideration. Nothing too hectic, keeping in mind we will have our little boy with us as well. $ wise just something comfortable and affordable - if we could all stay in the 1 room that would be good also. Would just like to relax, experience some Thai culture, have a few quiet drinks, snorkel etc...

Never being to Thailand before so any advice would be great. Much appreciated.

Kho Lanta.
Most places allow an extra bed ( extra charge ), and I presume the kid can sleep with you on the big bed.
I've stayed at Lanta Villa, and it would be suitable. Get a big AC room.

Khao Lak is only about 70 km from Phuket airport. There is really no touristy spot in-between. Other "nearby" touristy places like Railay and Phi Phi do require a fair bit of travel and hopping on and off ferries and longtail boats may be a bit of a hassle for a 70 year old.

The northern beaches of Phuket close to the airport are rather nice and untouristy. There is a link to Jamie's Phuket Blog in the link list of my second link below - top right hand corner. It probably has some info on these places and maybe some of the nicer places to stay. You might also check some of reviews on tripadvisor and booking outfits like sawadee.com, Agoda etc.

May is low season in Phuket and so hotel prices become ridiculously low and maybe you might consider staying on one of the southern tourist beaches. Kata Yai and Noi are the nicest of the popular ones - for a really nice, laid back and scenic area, Cape Panwa is the go. Cape Panwa Hotel's budget sister, The Bay, is a great location.
The southern tourist beaches aren't too big on Thai culture, however.
