MBK jokers : a warning from history

made the all-too-common mistake of leaving my phone charger stuck in the wall of the last place I checked out of.

this is an easy mistake to make, in fact I'd recommend that it's best to try to remember to unplug your charger from the wall the night before you finally pack your bag in the morning to leave as it's easy to forget, a mistake that can be compounded if you happening to be using an adaptor as well.

in any case, I had to get a new charger first thing this morning. 4th floor MBK was just waking up at about 10.30. You could just feel across the floor that nearly everybody was still half asleep and that hardly anybody was in any fit state to trade.

asked at the first place, and after much palaver, they finally managed to find what surely must be one of the most standard accessories going - a charger for the most commonplace Nokia on the market.

then came the first joke of the day : an asking price of 250 baht, for a secondhand one. This didn't even merit a reply from me. They found out my real name : Vapour Trail. I disappeared.

walked over a few shops, and the comedy continued. This time, the woman asked for 300 baht.

finally, at the 3rd place, the girl said 100 baht for a new or supposedly new one. This I found acceptable and I handed over the money.

I'm going to Chatuchak tomorrow and I bet I could pick up one there for 50 or maybe even 30, but my phone will have run out of charge by then.

so just remember : sometimes, you read bullshit in guidebooks about vendors giving offering good, keen, competitive prices first sale of the day, to give them good luck for the rest of the trading session. Don't believe a word of it : the robbing bastards will try to skin you first thing.

#1 not sure I understand - so it serves me right to get a reasonable price rather than get ripped off by those jokers? What's funny about getting fair treatment at the third attempt and avoiding getting ripped off by a pair of clowns at the first and second?

LoL - I was joking with you! If you thought you got a reasonable price at MBK, then why are you so sure that they will be half of the price (or less) at JJ market? That doesn't seem like a fair price to me! I made the comment because I thought you would sure know these things with all of your experience in Thailand. The =)~ would indicate a jovial attitude! Come on man - have a beer!

too early to have a beer mate. I'm not Thai. Tell you what, I'll have a look round Chatuchak tomorrow - I haven't been for ages, I bet there'll be going for 50. You can get 2nd hand chargers in Rotherham car boot sales in the UK for that!

you might even have a chance with an actual fifty baht note these days, that many people are turning up in Thailand.

Report back and let us know! I am curious to know myself. I have never thought of JJ as the place for these kinds of things.

Last week my wife (Thai) bought a used charger in the market in Pattaya for B 40. That seemed to be the standard price.

Just leave the phone plugged into the charger overnight. Grab your phone and charger in the morning.

Life's what you make it!

$8.00 right? For a charger....sounds OK - but $1.50 plus - I suppose you could factor in the BTS fare to JJJ and back...and the time spent...and you'll save maybe 6 bucks on the price?
How much per hour do you work for? I might be able to give you a job!

G'day!

in Pattaya, I'm pretty sure I bought a new one for 70 baht once, yes good tip #7 not the first time I've made that mistake. Before I was able to rectify it by just shooting round the corner and getting the charger and adaptor back, having checked into a different hotel nearby.

Bwhahaha, often think the same thing myself. For all the value (or lack of) some travellers place on products, many seem to place little to no value on their very own time as they trawl the streets of foreign countries in the quest to save $1.

I also find the obsession with attributing what is the worldwide practice of opportunism only to peoples of countries less wealthy than their own rather odd. Walk into any market or shopping centre in the world and you will find disparities in prices like this.

Some of my best adventures in foreign lands have been while looking for the "best" deal available. Otherwise I might end up lying on a sunbed beside the swimming pool of my hotel all day ( NOT ).

The real mystery to me is why people spend a lot of money travelling to SEA, only to spend all day drinking p*** and watch footie on the giant screen, while eating the same rubbish as back home, when they could just go to Spain or Cyprus for a bit of sun. It's not as though they actually have any interest in the country.

200 baht is not $1. It's $6, and it took me about 100 seconds to save it.

sure it's a worldwide practice. I've got my own shops/business at home and if some wise guy tried to chisel me out of six dollars out of sheer laziness I'd tell them to and fuck themselves just like I'm teling you.
