Stop in Hong Kong - any ideas?

Hi
I am flying back out to NZ in Jan and hopefully going to stop of in Hong Kong. I was hopeing to spend a week or so there but would like to explore the surrounding area/China. Does anyone have any ideas? I would quite like to go on an organised tour because I will be on my own.

Thanks!!!

Tess

What are your interests & budget? Within a short train or ferry ride of HKG you could go to Macau, Zhuhai, Shenzhen or Guangzhou. However if you have more money or want to travel further you could fly or take a night to Yangshou.

And you'll need a visa to enter China too.

If you are holding NZ passport you can get a Chinese single entry visa from China Travel Service (CTS) office from Kowloon for HKD210, takes 2 business days to process.

The KCR train leaves from Kowloon to Guangzhou with one stop (Dongguan, China) takes only less than 2 hours. Upon arriving in Guangzhou East Station you can connect with the metro to virtually everywhere, the above ground traffic is really bad so the metro is the most convenient, and cheap. The area between Guangzhou and Hong Kong is mainly industrial area with lots of factories and not much more, except the border town of Shenzhen which boast a few man-made attractions such as the Minsk World, Window of the World etc.

I think 3 full days is enough to explore Hong Kong and Kowloon main urban area, and if you like theme park, you will probably need one day at Ocean Par

No need for organized tours in HK (strictly my op.). Lots of english speaking people, very good, and inexpensive public transportation, very safe and clean.

Get yourself an octopus card and use it for the public transp. Recommended sights: Lantau Island (big Buddha), Stanley (maritime museum and Irish bars), Aberdeen (boat people), the railway to the top of the mountain, the night market in Kowloon, and Macau.

All accessible via public transp. I do not recommend Shenzhen, it is a dump, not worth your time.

You can fill a week in HK and Macau, especially if you are into food.
