In Thialand Nov 10-28th, what to do??

Hi All,

I arrive in Bangkok on Sat for 2 and 1/2 weeks, I have my first night booked at Khaosan Rd but noting else. My plan was to head south, spend some time on the East Coast - Surat Thani/Koh Phangan/Sanui then head over to the West - Krabi/Koh Phi Phi etc. It my first trip to Thailand - in fact my first backpacking trip ever, I'm a 26 year old female travelling on my own. I have a few ideas on what I want to do; cookery course, elephant trek, climbing, visit a National Park, kayaking, see a muay thia match as well as a bit of time relaxing on a sunny beach.

After looking at the weather reports I'm wondering if I should change my plan and head north for a week before hitting the south? Is the rain in the south likely to die down over the next week or so? I want to see some of the real thailand with out heading too far off the beaten track (being a complete novice at this travelling business!!). I guess that I'm just worried that the rain is going to stop me being able to do the stuff that I wanted to do?

Any advice on where to go and what to do where would be much appreciated.

Thanks

The East coast, or Samui & Phangan are currently experiencing some serious rain, with courtesy of the monsoon. Have a look at my Samui waether blog, first link below.
For Phuket try Batfish' Phuket weather blog it will give you a fair indication about Krabi and Phi Phi as well. Phuket should have nice weather soon (ish).

Unless the rain winds down, the north may actually be a good option, not much rain but cold at night!

Good luck, hope to see you down here soon.

Agreed. The Samui area tends to be pretty wet thru Nov - actually Dec too, although statistically not as much rain. On the Andaman, it gets drier as November progresses, so if you can hit this later in your trip it seems sound to me.
The north tends to get drier sooner, as does the eastern Gulf - Ko Samet and big Ko Chang and its neighbours.
I have more details of the weather first link and a lot of the islands second link.
BTW, if you really really want to see the Samui area islands and won't get another chance, I wouldn't let the chance of wetter conditions put you off if I was you (hell of a sentence that one!). At the same time 2 and a half weeks does not give you a lot of time, perhaps you will have to sacrifice an area.

Me and my friends are arriving at KPN on Nov 19th and staying there until the end of November - I've heard it's rained too much to get around the island and that parts are flooded - does anyone know any more on this?

Thanks,

Suzanne.

I may not have gone where I intended to go but I think I ended up where I needed to be...

For cooking classes and elephant camp and trekking, you should head to Chiang Mai first after Bangkok. Then go to the Andaman side closer to the end of your trip when the weather is better. I would skip the Samui side if the weather doesn't improve. Spend time on Phuket, Phi Phi and Krabi.

Suze, the main roads from the pier to Hat Rin (which includes all the south coast beaches) and to the north coast and north west coast beaches are paved and would be okay in all except the most dire conditions.
Not so the road which goes over the mountains to my favourites like Thong Nai Pan, Ao Sadet etc. This is dirt a large %, is super steep in parts and would get real tricky in REALLY wet periods. At other times a lot of the bungalow transport into here is 4wd and so it can get thru.
The good news for REALLY wet periods is you can still access these beaches by longtail from Hat Rin, plus the daily Samui - Eastern beaches ferry which picks up at East Hat Rin on the way thru. This will run in all except very rough days.

one of thailand's most amazing festivals, Loy Krathong, is celebrated Nov 23-25 this year. don't miss it! do a google search online and read more about it. being somewhere close to wather, preferably a river, is a good idea. if you're flying out of bangkok on the 28th you might want to stay there for the last day of the festival. i'd maybe do the south first, and then head for chiang mai at the end of your trip instead though. chiang mai is an awesome place to be for Loy Krathong. i'll be there myself this year. i cant wait!
cheers,
