Tibet travel help required!

I'm planning to travel through South east asia, china, tibet, nepal and india next year for 6 months.
I have a fair idea of what to do in most destinations but Tibet is confusing me and I would welcome any advice!

*Could somone please explain to me the notion of travel permits and guides? I was really only planning on spending 5 days in Lhasa and would rather do it without a guide - is this possible? is it too difficult to get a travel permit without a guide?

**I was planning to get the train from or to beijing one way and fly from or to Kathmandu the other. Is one option better than the other for any reason? i.e is it better to arrive from beijing or kathmandu? Does either make acclimatisation to the altitude easier?

***Is there a better time of year to travel in Tibet?

Any other helpful advice appreciated!
Thankyou!

Do Beijing (mainland China) -- Lhasa -- Nepal. Easier in terms of visas etc.
Cheers!

As the others have said, enter Tibet from china not Nepal. If you do it the other way around it may be difficult to continue into China from Tibet. Generally speaking you don't need a guide for Lhasa but you will need a Tibet Travel Permit which is usually purchased along with your ticket. You guest house can probably take care of this for you.

Best time of year I don't know. I was there in November and some places weren't accessible due to weather.

Best acclimatisation : Beijing-Lhasa, even better with an extra night in Xining.

How the permit situation will be next year and if you can travel independently you have to wait and see. Right now they are a bit edgy and not giving permits out to individual travellers. With the Olympics coming up next summer it will have to be watch and see. You will always be able to go there on a tour.
China, Tibet, Nepal is the best way.

Yes, it is hard to say what the permit situation will be next year. It could be the same, but it could be totally different.

It is best to go to Tibet from the rest of China and then go to Nepal. The most popular time to go to Tibet is during the summer (large crowds in Lhasa in July and August), though many regions in southern Tibet can be visited year round (even in winter).
