It can be disorientating when you just arrive, i would suggest Hello guesthouse on soi rambuttri, a short stroll from khao san, and ir has a huge sit down area for when they have movies , lay down or sit up on cusjions, a great place to meet people, relax, read the paper have a cheap and tasty meal.2

Marky P, if you haven't already found some people to hangout with i suggest checking out some of the little cocktail carts on KSR, if they are still there. they usually come out at about 6 or 7 in the evening. People will usually be more than willing to chat and drink with you. DOn't be nervous about talking to randoms - if they are worth talking to then they'll give you the time to chat. I always think that a part of travel is to meet others, hopefully people that you approach will think this way.5
G to the Gekko bar on Soi Rambuttri ... It is on the back side of the wat. If is good for people watching and chatting with folks. I have met quite a few people there. The VW van mentioned is a good idea too.
