need to pre-book in Koh Lanta?

My husband and I are planning to spend around two weeks in Koh Lanta in March or April with our by-then 3-1/2-year old and 7-month-old daughters. We've been to Thailand several times before w/o kids and always just "winged it," but now that we'll have (possibly) cranky children in tow, I'm wondering if we should pre-book our accomodations. We'd prefer to see in-person the accomodations before committing to something, but I'm wondering if all the good spots are booked ahead and we'll end up in a yucky place, wishing we'd reserved one of the places I've seen on the internet that looks lovely and inexpensive. If need be, we can spend up to 3,000 baht/night, but it seems like we can get something quite wonderful for far less. Any advice? Book one night? Book it all? Or show up and choose the best place based on reality rather than a website? And are prices cheaper walk-up or online?

Thanks!

March and April are not high season, so you will be ok. But I understand with children you may want to have a booking somewhere so you can just arrive and not walk around laden with luggage , hot and tired with kids in tow.

You could book for the first couple of nights and then wander around the island to see if there is somewhere more suited to you, or just arrive and stay somewhere a couple of nights and do the same.

Not sure if walk in prices or online cheaper, someone else will know

On Koh Lanta there are many, many choices for places to stay. Depending on where you decide, that is, what area, your experience could be quite different. The closer to Saladan the denser things seem to be...resorts, people, traffic, mud/dust.

Last year on Koh Lanta things starting slowing down a bit by the middle of March and were very quiet by the beginning of April. One reason for this is that the weather does become hotter and the overall weather pattern changes (.i.e., the winds shift bringing in slighter rougher seas, it starts to rain a little bit, etc.).

At the moment, all of the western side of Koh Lanta is changing rapidly. There is a lot of construction and many more people around due to all of the work. I went to the Sunday market this morning in Saladan and it was just like high season...quite a few tourists, too.

One place you might want to consider for at least the first few nights that would be good for your family:

Lanta Casuarina Resort (they are in a nice quiet location and have a pool) link.

Other good options (but no pool) are Relax Bay Resort which is quiet and secluded, and the new Lanta Castaway Resort. (www.lantacastaway.com). All of these are close to Phra Ae Village where you can find restaurants and some shopping.

Again, though, be forewarned, there is a lot of change in the works right now here and this will continue for awhile it seems.

Well, you might do worse than Lanta Villa. I stayed there a couple times. Their AC rooms are nice. They have a pool. The beach is great.
However, I haven't been in a few years, so can't say if there are any changes recently.

Id just book one night- so you can check out the place. far beaches are nicer, yet less populated. Northern are many Swedish family’s. look at trip advisor for real travellers posts.

Ps Relax bay has a pool now.

Lanta during the peak season of 2005/2006 was not busy. Guess it was not so long after the tsunami. By contrast late March, early April this year was far busier... much to our surprise, and this was not even the Songkran week. If you are hoping to get anything beach front in one of the reasonably priced resorts..... book ahead. Sure, there will be places available... but you will get what everyone else has rejected.

You will have no problems un-booked in March and April. I have a fair bit of info from my visit last March in the second link below.
