March and April are not high season, so you will be ok. But I understand with children you may want to have a booking somewhere so you can just arrive and not walk around laden with luggage , hot and tired with kids in tow.2

Lanta during the peak season of 2005/2006 was not busy. Guess it was not so long after the tsunami. By contrast late March, early April this year was far busier... much to our surprise, and this was not even the Songkran week. If you are hoping to get anything beach front in one of the reasonably priced resorts..... book ahead. Sure, there will be places available... but you will get what everyone else has rejected.7
You will have no problems un-booked in March and April. I have a fair bit of info from my visit last March in the second link below.
