New Year in Thailand

I have decided to spend 2 weeks in Thailand from 29th December. I am trying to figure out the best way how to spend that time there, so please, share your thoughts:

1. I went to Cambodia last year and absolutely hated Khao San Road, the crowd, the noise... Should I stay away from the southern towns (Koh Samui, Phuket)?
2. What about partying for New Year? Are there some party spots in Chiang Mai, or is this sort of fun reserved for the south?
3. Is it too hard to find a single bed room in that period? Should I reserve in advance?
4. I just love the dance and theatre... any recommendations for a good show in Chian Mai?

Many thanks!

1. well, I stay near KSR now for the cool season, but can understand that many hate it. yes, about all main tourist towns, esp in main seaon will be just as crowded as Split+Dubrovnik+Hvar together on the busiest day of the year. besides, Samui is an island and not really a town. read that guidebook and see that there are many more quiet alces, though around that time is really ht emost busy time of the whole year
2.new Yr party are EVERYhwhere where there are enough west-tourists, thus also CMai. theyre are not at all tipical Thai, as they have their own Nw Yr on 14/4
3.depends on what your budget is and what U want; the CHEAP places as has been said so often, do not take and cannot handle reservations, its turn up and see. besides the main busy beach places, you will find SOME place, perhaps a double though.
4.ask ChanChao, our dear contributor lving there/nearby. what type of d/t anyway? the tipical Thai dance is for free in about any major shopping place.
PS; also note that about ALL local transpo=bus/train FROM BKK willbe booked solid the days till 31/12, ditto back to BKK the few days after. chances to find a spot going south when after arrival 28/12; NIL. book domestic flite NOW if you go northbound

so you believe anything - on the news? on TV? in your guidebook? on this forum? good luck then - you'll need it!

1. Yes stay away from both those places, awful
2. Hmmm CM is ok, although its a bit cold in December? The islands would be better and weather wise the Andaman. I was on Kho Tao last yr and that was ok.
3. Really really depends where you are, haad rin - yes. But varies
4. Hmmmm I live in CM but Theatre, unsure. There are some awful clubs, and hot shots which is funny if nothing else.
