Latest on Tibet Travel

What's the latest on visas and wot-not. I'm flying into Beijing on Tuesday and was hoping to take the train to Lhasa via Xi'an a few days later. Leos Hostel say they can't issue a permit without a joining a tour which isn't quite what I had in mind. I was also thinking about heading out west if the visa situation allows.

Any info would be much appreciated.

Leo´s cant get you a permit as an independent travellers at the moment. The other agencies around China cant either. head for Xian, Lanzhou, Xining or Golmud and buy the trainticket yourself, or get a chinese to buy them for you. Theres a very good chance you will make it to Lhasa thant way.
