These are not rumors , it´s been a unchanging rock in Chinas policy for at least the last decade : no entry from Nepal in to Tibet on any kind of individual tourist visa , only on a group permit , and any individual visa is automatically scrapped at the Friendship bridge checkpoint. If the same applies on exiting thru Nepal .. I dunno.5
I assume that you are not returning from Nepal through Tibet. It seems to me that reports are that when entering Tibet from Nepal is where any individual Chinese visa gets cancelled. I can't recall anyone reporting what happens when you leave through Nepal and then reenter China through some other point.
