Overland Lijiang - Panzhihua (Jinjiang) - Chengdu in winter

Hello everyone,

Can anyone offer advice on land travel between Lijiang and Chengdu at the end of December/early January?

I see from LP China that there is a bus service Lijiang - Panzhihua (Jinjiang), which would connect us with the rail up to Chengdu.

We will be wanting to reach Chengdu to connect with the train to Lhasa on a prebooked date, so don't want to run into big delays.

Is there likely to be a problem with the bus route due to snow in the winter?

Are we likely to have difficulty getting train seats from Panzhihua (Jinjiang) to Chengdu?

If this route is likely to prove troublesome, should we consider backtracking toward Kunming and then north again to Chengdu?

We also considered flying this leg, but if the land route is scenic we would prefer to experience it. (And I am travelling with my daughter who is on a very tight budget!) Can anyone comment on the scenery?

Any advice or previous experience would be appreciated.

If you really need to be in Chengdu on a certain date, I think going by train via Kunming would be the most risk-proof, though quite circuituous.

I did this route twice before, 1st time took a train from Chongqing to Panzhihua, then transfered a sleeping bus for Lijiang for about 8 hours, 2nd time did it from Lijiang to Panzhihua by bus, and transfered a train for Chengdu. The Panzhihua long distance bus station close to the train station. No problem at all, easy to get the train ticket for Chengdu. It is most economical route from Lijiang to Chengdu.

Cheers!

Hello Everyone,

I am planning a similar trip and am leaving Beijing for Kunming (Yunnan) in a few weeks (unfortunately the spring festival rush couldn't be avoided!) Our plan is to head to Dali then Lijiang and spend about 1.5 days in each place. From Lijiang we're planning on taking an overnight bus to Panzhihua. We have to fly out of Chengdu back to Beijing on the 13th, and we're wondering if anyone knows
1) how long/how much is the train from Panzhihua to Chengdu
2) is there anything that shouldn't be missed along the way?
3) Any alternatives to this itinerary? i.e., perhaps there's something northeast of yunnan that's also worth the visit.
I was in Sichuan once a few years ago and loved it, but only for a few days. I don't know anything about the south.
Anything else we should know?
Thanks for any tips u may have

Happy trails
