Guesthouses and cafes with wifi internet

We will be traveling through China the next couple of months and are looking for inexpensive guesthouses with wifi internet or ADSL in the room so that we can connect a laptop. The cities we'll visit include Kashgar, Urumqi, Xi'an, Beijing, Shainghai, Chengdu, Yunnan and we'll be stopping in smaller places along the way.

Any suggestions for guesthouses or cafes with wifi (wireless internet) in China? Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a laptop at a regular internet cafe?

Thank you in advance!

When I was in China in 2004, internet connection was the most difficult thing to find. LP guide did give some addresses, but we found out that often the places had been closed and new had opened somewhere else. We used to ask people in the streets to find a place.
So I'm wondering if this has changed since then so much that now we can find wifi connection in guesthouses. I don't have impression that the Chinese authorities are now more "open-minded" to internet and to what internet can be as door to the "free" world.

Get lost or go nowhere!

Theres quite a lot of internetcafees around now, they dont even demand registration by passport anymore. Some guesthouses also have WI-FI, maybe only at their restaurant/cafes.

China: Loads of cheap 2RMB per hour internet cafes, not so many Wifi places outside of the Eastern seaboard cities, Beijing, Shanghai Hong Kong (especially the latter).

Regarding Wi-Fi, i usually find that alot of international youth hostels these days seem to be installing Wi-Fi. The one in Urumqi does, many in Hong Kong, some in Beijing, and Shanghai. Of course, airports and some international coffee houses...

The only one that I can confirm would be Old Xie's IYH in Lijiang.
Would you be ok with connecting to broadband via cable? That's much more popular here than wi-fi.
StarSUCKS charges for wi-fi, it's not free.
Cheers!

In Chengdu, Sim's Cozy Guesthouse has free wi-fi in the verandah area.

Kashgar lies where the maps in people's minds dissolve.

Moon Inn in Lijiang also has wireless and wired, depending on your room.

Always looking for new adventures, new cultures, interesting geography.

Hi,
As being in Kashgar, I reccommond you the Kashgar Qinibag Hotel which is possible for the internet in the lobby. There are very cheap rooms and expensive rooms. It is very near the Idkah Mosque. It is in the center of the town. Now, it is very easy to get internet connection in every city in China. abdulcafe@gmail.com

WROOOOOOOOOOOOONG! It's free. If you don't believe me you and I can go together and you can watch me use it and not pay for it.

I know of a few cafes in Shanghai where you can get free wi-fi.
I like the Coffee Beanery on the ground floor of Shanghai Grand Theatre at People's Square, it's always uncrowded and quiet in there.
Element Fresh has a few locations around town, scroll down my VirtualTourist Shanghai Restaurants travel page for more details on how to get to them. I think Wagas has similar food and also the free wi-fi.
Cheers!

Oh and I recently booked a budget hotel in Xi'an for a couple of friends just before October holiday week, and it did come with free cable broadband Internet; and I also have similar in Shanghai. Let me know if you're interested.
In Urumqi, try at FuBar.
Cheers!
