Overland from Lhasa (Tibet) to Kathmandu (Nepal) in November

hello, does anybody know, if it's possible to visit the mt. everest base camp by the end of november? and is it possible to travel overland into nepal in this time (november).
our CITS travel agent told us, that everest is closed and that we have to fly from lhasa to kathmandu. we hope they're wrong!
best greets from shanghai /rachel & ueli
ps does anybody plan to travel/tour in tibet for two weeks starting on the 11th of november?

That's also what I've heard. A lot of the places are closed in Tibet in November simply because it is too cold, get snowed in and road blocked. I don't think EBC would be an option (as far as I've found out, I'm going to tibet late november, probably one week later than you start) I'm planning to spend 8 days or so there, mainly around Lhasa area since can't go anywhere else.

Weather should not be a problem in winter. Many people have recommended visiting Everest in winter on this forum, and I have never heard of the land route to Nepal being blocked.
CITS is the last agency I'd listen to- don't trust them for any information. Go to Lhasa and ask the FIT in Banak Shol.

hello,

The best weather for visit to Mt. everest is from May - August only. Other months are not recommended because the roads will be blocked because of snowfalls at different passes. Evenwhen I visited Tibet in September 1st week, the road close to high passes was muddy and I saw few vehicles broken down in between. Alternate vehicle picked them up from the nearest roadheads. If you want to see Lhasa, Tsedang during November then that is fine but I do not recommend to cross the passes from Lhasa. While going to Mt. Everest base camp you need to cross many passes and the road access will be almost closed.

In case you need further details please let me know so that I can supply information as much as possible.

thanks for your replies!

dear zhaoyun, did you have a bad experience, this is the first we've heard something negative of CITS? we googled FIT and this is the site we found, what looks interesting
http://www.57tibet.com/en/home.html
thanks for that bit!

dear karna balami, thanks for your report. it's surprising to us, all the information (guide books and internet etc.) we researched state that august to october is the best time to visit tibet. but you're right, we can't predict mother nature and maybe you just had an unlucky week!

dear lazysnail, don't give up too easily ;-)

I will have to support #2 on CITS, generally they tend to think all travellers wants to stay at 4.star hotels and often claims visiting this and that place is not possible.

I'm just been realistic.... don't have your hopes up too high....nature is nature...if it is inaccessible then it is for the sake of your own safety
I've asked a lot of people that have either been living in tibet for a long time or is in the tourism business...if they want to make money they would of tried to make you go as many places possible...make contingent plans or be prepared to wait around for road conditions.
good luck

hello Rachel, ueli and mily, and other intrested people

I'm planning for trip Lhasa Kathmandu by 4WD, with stop at EBC. (trip of 7-8 days)
Normally I will be in Lhasa from 11-12-13 november (I fly from KTM to Lhasa, but don't know yet exact arriving day in Lhasa). Arriving in KTM around 20-21 november.

We travel with 2 girls and most probably a third person (guy that I learned trough thorntree).

But can be nice to make bigger group in jeep : I think up to 4-5 people is comfortable in jeep ?

any intrests ?

#3- You're mixing up the reasons for Everest being difficult to get to. Early September is the end of the rainy season in Tibet- that would seem to me to be a more logical explanation for muddy roads than the onset of winter. One of the benefits of traveling to Everest in winter is the dryness, which means less muddy roads and fewer clouds and therefore better views of Everest.
#4, Keep in mind that though FIT is theoretically one organization, all its branches in Lhasa operate independently. From personal experience, I would only recommend the branch located in Banak Shol. The driver who took me to Everest was very good. His name was Losang, if you want to ask for him.
I don't think anyone on this forum would recommend CITS, for reasons that Anaya gave above. As the Lonely planet for China states, "the main purpose of CITS is to get you on an expensive tour"- NOT to give you reliable advice.
Look at the link posted by #5. Losang will have much better info than anyone here, or in a Chinese state-owned throwback like CITS.
