which of these hotels do you recommend?

Hi folks! My friend and I, both women, are planning a trip to Bangkok in the first week of December. Our budget is around 1800 baht, our priority is safety, cleanliness (bathrooms) and easy access to the cultural sights and some shopping too, in that order.
Baan Sukhumvit, Royal Asia Lodge, Silom@Trinity, Silom City Inn, Bedrooms Boutique Hotel, Samran Place - are these safe places for women to stay in? What does it mean when it says a hotel is close to "notorious Phatpong" or to "night life"? Do these hotels suit family/women travellers?

Bangkok is safe and you will not have any trouble staying in any of these hotels.

Patpong and Sukhumvit around Nana Plaza are two areas that have night entertaiment, so think of it as 42nd Street in NYC or Lasvegas on the strip.

If that is what you interested in you can have a look, but if not just do not go there. All these hotels are not on these blocks that offer the venue....

But Patpong can be fun for shopping for fake designer accessories... there is nothing offensive just walking down the street but you may get some young Thai guy offering you to see a show, and it will not be a Brodway show or an opera...

I don't personally know the hotels you mention, but you might add Unico Grande Silom to your list. It's in your price range and has a beautiful big pool/tropical garden on the roof and an above average breakfast buffet. Rooms are clean, nicely decorated, big and airy. The taxi drivers still know it by its former name: Tower Inn. Don't worry about "proximity to nightlife" references. Silom and lower Sukhumvit are the main business district where most of the modern hotels are, but they have pockets of nightlife all around. If you don't partake in it, it won't concern you. It isn't like a US red light district.

The Asia Hotel is another in your price range. It's right on the Skytrain line and close to the Siam/Chitlom/Ploenchit shopping.

Thanks for your replies, I've researched Asia Hotel, and every review says "it's exciting," "it suits males looking for action", "cabaret" etc, so I'm quite worried - have nothing in mind except taking in some sightseeing

Asia Hotel is a bit old but location is good and it is away from all the night action, and it is close to Paragon so you can enjoy you shopping for a price!

Re#3 I don't know where you've been researching, but the time I stayed at the Asia it appeared to be full of middle aged people, families and a few tour groups. No "males looking for action" that I ever saw. They'd be closer to "the action" I think. There is that cabaret thing in the basement, but I can truthfully say I never noticed it. Only later found out about it. And it's actually a touristy thing, not part of "the action."

yup Asia Hotel is totally suitable for families/women travelers...the Calypso Cabaret is pretty touristy, but fun and very tame by BKK standards.

I use to live right next door to it on Pet 9 and would walk past the hotel to Siam Descovery and Hard Rock Caffee.

I never seen any strange stuff going on!

Anyway, OP, I think you worry too much about where the hotel is located vis-a-vis nightlife. Some of Bangkok's finest 5-star hotels - Landmark, Sheraton Grande, Marriott, Westin Grande - are located in Lower Sukhumvit, an area that's pretty well Ground Zero for nightlife. In Bangkok, they co-exist, no problem.

Not a single one worthy of recommendation, including the Unico Grande(Tower Inn) and the Asia. Just standard tourist fare or worse or slightly odd locations.

Most people choose one of three areas;
1. The Banglamphu area, encompassing the Khaosan and Phra Athit Road areas. This area is good for sightseeing, river access, low cost shopping, nightlife and meeting other travellers. Recommended budget hotel/guesthouse; New Siam 2 for 900 baht or less. For a river view, their is the New Siam Riverside.

2. Sukhumwit Road. This area is good for nightlife. Not good access to the sights. At nighttime, lower Sukhumvit becomes a sex tourists paradise. That's the area from Soi 1 until Soi 23. During the day, you can visit nearby malls.

3. Siam Square. This area is good for shopping and daytime entertainment. Little in the way of nightlife other than the HardRock Cafe and a Hotel nightclub, CM2.

4. Silom/Sathorn. This area is ok for nightlife, to encompass Patpong Night Market and various other types of venues, including adult entertainment.

Difficult to recommend anywhere in particular without knowing your taste.

Just re-read your post. If it's sightseeing you want, in other words, actually seeing something of Bangkok, I would stay in Banglamphu.

You'll just have a better travel experience and be more likely to make friends.

You can always visit the other areas.

Taxis are inexpensive. You're unlikely to spend more than £1 per journey. Make sure they use their meters. Avoid the Tuk Tuks, other than for a single fun ride(if you wish). Ignore ALL of their offers.

Don't buy any jewellery from 'Government shops'. :) No such thing.

Use the inexpensive Express Boat from the Phra Athit pier(two minutes from the hotel) to visit the sights.

New Siam 2; http://www.newsiam.net/ns/newsiam2.php Main problem with NS2 is the lack of proper blankets, though that may have changed.

New Siam Riverside pictures: NS Riverside pics As double the price of New Siam 2. Overpriced at 1800 baht for a Riverview room in my opinion.

I have used this company many times, for Myanmar, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.

They have a new feature, with a map of each area once you click on it, and the arrow will highlight what property is where, and if you like it, click on it for more details, great for looking around Sukhumvit or Chaing Mai etc...

Their prices are about the same as everyone else, PassionAsia.com I have used many times too....this site takes AMEX, which is great for Disputes, or overcharges, though I have never had it happen on either booking service-

the only one on your list that i have stayed in is Samran Place- which has absolutely nothing exceptional about it. but Thailand is very safe, so it really doesn't matter where you stay. the only thing i'd watch out for is taxi drivers. don't be too friendly to them.
