a few questions

im coming to thailand next month. flying into bangkok.

-how much THB will i need to bring with me for taxi etc.? i dont want to bring alot, i will withdraw more from an atm when i need it.

-whats the name of a good guesthouse to stay on khao san rd for my first night? just so i can get my bearings, after that i want to head up to chiang mai, where can i book train tickets? i will be spending more time in bangkok at the end of my trip.

-where is a good place to buy a mobile phone on KSR and how much should i expect to pay? i dont want anything flash, i dont want to bring my mobile from home. i just want to use it for sms so i can keep in touch with my worried mum back home!

  • you don't need to bring any baht. There are ATMs in the arrival hall of the airport. Get an amount like 9900 so that you have small money for the taxi and not only 1000-bills.

    - tons of guesthouses there. Travelfish has a lot of recommendations.

    - I would go to the 6th floor of MBK (big department store) where dozens of shops are selling all kinds of mobile phones. A sim-card with some credit is about 200 baht.

I agree with #1, don't change money in Australia, for example the rate quoted this morning by the CBA forex was just over 28 THB to the AUD, while Kasikorn Bank in Thailand was quoting 30+THB to the AUD and slightly higher for travellers cheques. My experience is that the money exchange booths operated by the various banks at the airport offer the same rate as the banks in the city. Very easy to change a little AUD after immigration and before the taxi rank.
