Take Canadian or US dollars??

I'm a Canadian traveling to Thailand for 3 months - will use debit card for money access - have a credit card for back up. I'm taking some cash to change when I arrive. Is it easy to change CDN money into Baht or do I need US dollars??

I wouldn't carry too much cash, better to get some traveller's cheques if you have the chance... also, just a warning. A friend of mine had his card "cloned" in BKK... not sure how, but this is more common with credit cards. it is probably in the "dangers and annoyances" section anyway.

right, canadian is fine. but, if you travel to cambodia or lao, USDs will come in handier.

You hurt my feelings...both of 'em!

Every time you change money from one currency to another you lose a small percentage. So changing from Canadian dollars to US dollars and then to Thai baht means you would probably lose a few percent, unnecessarily. US dollars might be more acceptable in some of the more off the beaten track places, but in Thailand, Canadian dollars can be easily exchanged anywhere.

There are ATM's right in the BKK airport - you can use debit cards. Cash C$$ accepted at banks in both Thailand and Lao, even in smaller Lao towns they had rates for Euro, C$ , Baht and Yen. best exchange rates in Lao in Vientiane, getting worse the further away you are. TC in my opinion not necessary. Cambodia is cash US$ - but they have ATM's dispensing US $$ !!!
Thai baht are readily exchanged at good rates in all banks in Laos and acceptable for most commercial transactions. Stock up on those if you want. Don't use your credit card for anything in SE Asia unless you absolutely have to, see post #2

you can change TC's in Cambodia US dollar for dollar very easily, they charge 2% so you get 98 back for each 100 check. I've not been to Laos for a while but I think they were less ready to give dollars for dollar checks and I ended up with quite a bit of kip.

I would only bring enough cash or TC's to deal with an emergency (maybe $200) and instead rely primarily on an ATM card, as the machines are virtually everywhere and work almost without a hitch. Arrive at the airport, draw out 10,000 baht and you're ready to roll. Make sure your ATM card is part of an international network (Plus, Interlink, Cirrus) and check bank transaction fees, but ATMs really are the way to go in Thailand. A seperate credit card (Visa/MC) would be a suitable backup.
