Extending Visa for US Passport

Hello, I was looking for some information regarding visa extensions for US citizens. I am in Dali and just entered China a few days ago on a 30 day visa. I know I want to stay about 45-50 days. When do I go to ask for the visa extension? Toward the end of the life of the visa? Are they likely to reject me, leaving me on short time with the rest of my trip?
Cheers in advance!

The extension is valid from the day you get it, so you need to apply at the end of the validity of your current visa. If in Tibet you will not get an extension. Some PSB offices outside Tibet are also a bit tricky while others are quite helpfull. generally if one PSB wont go to another place and get it sorted out.

around the 20-25th day would be the best time to apply for an extensiion. They are not likely to reject you.

I dont want to sound rude, but if you knew you wanted to stay 45 days, why didnt you just get a 60 day visa??

We never really grow up, we only learn how to act in public.

Thanks for the advice. And westwood, it is difficult for US citizens to get a 60 day visa when applying in the USA. I took my visa before the price jack in August and wasnt sure of how long I would stay at that time. So, there is you answer. Thanks to everyone else!

I have 8 months that I would like to spend traveling around China, with a little travel to other countries in the region. Any ideas of how to do this?

I met several travelers who had been traveling for up to nine months in China, getting extension after extention. Read here and in the LP-China about the towns that are helpful about extensions. Start looking for your next extension when you have about a week left, so that in case you get rejected in one city, you can go to another. Plan ahead for an itinerary for the next month (regardless of whether that's where you will actually go) before you apply for your extension, in case they ask, so you have a good reason for your extension. Have a plan B for leaving the country from wherever you are in case you can't get an extension.

US passport holders will pay the equivalent of about 100 USD for the extension. Leshan, about a 2 hour bus ride from Chengdu is reportedly a good place to get an extension because they seem to add 30 days to the end of your current expiration date as compared to 30 days from the time you apply.

Since I have taken the time to answer your question, it would be nice if you took the time to respond as to whether the information was helpful.
