Phuket Aspasia and Baan Krating

Hi folks,

Has anyone stayed at either of these places, or care to recommend somewhere away from Patong (Karon, Kata, Nai Harn areas) that's good without being a Big Resort? Stayed at the Kata Thani a few years ago but not really to my taste. Didn;t matter at the time as we were sailing in the King's Cup Regatta so were away most of the time.

They are completely different places in different areas.

Ban Krating is at Ao Sane beach, a very small beach down by Nai Harn. Nothing to do there, very relaxing and good value for money.

Aspasia is in Kata Center, 5 minutes walk to the beach, with lots of restanrants and bars in the area. Far more luxurious hotel than Baan Krating.

Why didn't you like Kata Thani (or maybe it was the area Kata Noi)? That might help with the decision where to go.

If you want peace and quiet Baan Krating is a great option - just be aware that it IS a very quiet area and reached by a narrow winding road. If you go anywhere in the night time you will need a vehicle or a taxi. I really like that area of Phuket.

Thanks folks. I rather like Kata Beach, restaurants and bars of that sort are fine with me, but didn't like the Kata Thani because it's a bit too much of a concrete resort. I figure Ao Sane isn't too far away to get out for a meal at Kata (hate being trapped on a resort) but a much more pleasant option for beach and chilling out. So Baan Krating sounds like the go. If anyone can suggest anywhere similar it would be appreciated as a fall back.

How's Phi Phi these days? I was there a few years before the Tsunami and it was horrible - built out and smelt like a sewer. With the greatest respect to all concerned a tidal wave was the best thing that could have happened to it.

We chartered a bare boat and went all over the Andaman after the Regatta. It was brilliant, but the Sunsail yachts were in terrible condition. Our engine blew up twice and the yacht had to be replaced (second time it just overheated badly), and Sunsail were not very apologetic about it.
