Ideal island for New Year celebration

This is my first time to Thailand. We are going for 3 weeks, and are planning to spend about 7-8 days on the beach (checking out 2 islands).

I desperately need help figuring out which island to pick for New Year stay for about 4 nights.
I also need help to picking a second island for approximately 3 nights. Nightlife on the 2nd island is not that important.

Here is what I have in mind:

1. Beatiful beach with soft white sand, turquoise water, and coconut palms. No rocky bottoms.
2. NOT crowded
3. Great for swimming and snorkeling. Maybe take an intro dive.
4. Conviniently located to get to the "active" areas of the island within 20-25 mins or so (renting a boat, getting snorkeling gear, going on a jungle tour, caves, and so on)
5. Under $50 accomodation (ideally, on the beach) with hot water and air conditioner. Something simple, clean, and nice. We can pay a bit more, but would like to stay under $50 if possible.
6. Option for a day trip to a nearby island
7. Nightlife on the island (important for the New Year celebration), and being able to get there from the beach I'm staying at

I'm considering Ko Phi Phi, Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, and Phuket (less exproled beaches on Phuket), and I'm open to any comments/suggestions.

Thanks a lot!

Wow, it's pretty hard to meet all your requirements - one place you might look at is Mountain Resort on Ko Lipe. Has all your requirements except no jungle tours, caves (although these may be possible on adjacent Ko Adang).
On Phi Phi, check travelfish.org for Relax Bay Resort on Pak Men Beach - on the laid back eastern coast. All your requirements - getting to the nightlife in Ton Sai is a bit of a trip, but the resort is sure to have some boats laid on at New Year.
I have written a fair bit more on both islands in the second link below.

Hi tezza,

Thank you so much for youe recommendations. After reading up quite a bit, it seems that Ko Phi Phi would be our best bet, given that this is our first trip to Thailand. Now, I have couple of questions:

1. If we stay at the Long Beach and deside to go for some nightlife to the Ton Sai, how easy is it to get a long tail boat from Long Beach to Ton Sai say at 7 Pm at night, and on the way back from Ton Sai at 1 AM? Also how much is it? I saw on your webside the price of 80 Baht. Is the price the same during the daytime and night time? Is that a price per person? How often do the long tail boats pick-up people from Long Beach?

2. How long is the ride on the long tail boat to Ton Sai from the Long Beach?

3. How long is the walk from Long Beach to Ton Sai? 1 hour?

3. I'm a bit concerned that staying on the Long Beach will limit our mobility. If that's the case, maybe we would be better off staying at the main village, and just going to Long Beach for a day trip? Then, can you please recommend a good place to stay in Ton Sai/Lo Dalam area within a 5-10 minute walking distance to the restaurants and bars?

Thank you,
Anna

1 - I think the longtails at night are 100. In high season longtails are shuttling at all hours.
2 - less than 10 minutes
3 - 30 to 40 minutes. If you do it at night, take a torch - although I noticed last trip (August) that a string of small gobes had been strung along the steepest bit just to the west of Long Beach. I'd still take a torch.
4- I've never felt limited in mobility staying at Long Beach. I haven't stayed in Ton Sai since my favourite cheapy Sun Smile disappeared in the tsunami. I've always liked the looks of Viewpoint if you want midrange - and those new bungalows at Cliff Climbing Bungalows at the far end of the spit look to be a good cheapy.
Read travelfish for some goodies in town.
