I received completely awful bikes that were not very roadworthy when I tried to rent in China. However, if you plan to go biking in Yunnan, I did notice that some of the bike hire places in Lijiang's old city stocked nice looking modern looking suspension mountain bikes for rent. Whatever you do, ask to inspect the bike first. Inspect the brakes especially. Some places stock a range of bikes from good to bad. If you just walk in like I do and say that you want a bike. They'll happily take your money and give you an older model, saving the nice looking newer model for display.
