Breaking a contract in China

What are the consequences for breaking a teaching/working contract in China? I know you need a letter of release to get a new work permit but what if you are just planning to travel in China and then go home? Can the place of employment cancel your work permit/housing registration etc? What about if the actual contract says you work for a differant company than the one you were working for(ie a publishing house rather than a school)?

Some Chinese people will curse and be angry for a short while.

<Can the place of employment cancel your work permit/housing registration etc>

I would assume that since your work permit, housing registration, etc are tied to your employment, they could cancel these things and make your life difficult.

I don't think it matters who the work permit says that you work for, they obviously have some sort of relationship with the publishing company to get the work permit and the housing registration. If they do decide they want to punish you, then of course, they can to cancel these things including canceling your visa, etc.

Why wouldn't they be able to do this? But the real quesiton is would they want to spend the time doing it or lose face by saying that the person didn't want to work for them? This I can't predict.

Since I have taken the time to answer your question, it would be nice if you took the time to respond as to whether the information was helpful.

If you do it.. Make sure you do it in the middle of the night and no one suspects it.. Otherwise, you can expect a nightmare drama..
If you are leaving a school in the lurch cause you didnt do enough research you should be ashamed of yourself and pay the breach penalties in the contract.. Schools pay alot of money to host foreign teachers..

Sounds like you're planning to break the contract and then enjoy yourself before going home.. How would you feel if the school treated your contract with the same respect. Yes, the school can file a legal claim against you which would mean that you could be stopped at the border and forced to stay until the legal matter is resolved in court.. Will that happen? Unlikely, but schools do have that option.. especially if it is a legal working contract and they sponsored you for your residence permit..

If you are on a F visa, then you arent' working legally and you have nothing to worry about except a angry former employer who would otherwise trry to make your life miserable..

Frankly, I think anyone who leaves a school in the lurch to do travel should get flogged thrown out.. skirt-balls

Rubbish. They use and abuse niave young foreigners, "forget" to pay them, and rarely meet contractual arrangements.

OP, nothing will happen. They can only threaten, because they are operating illegally too. They do NOT want to go to court.

Harry there are plenty of schools that do meet contractual agreements and treat their staff perfectly fairly. Of course not all but saying that because some schools are bad foreign teachers can act however they want is ignorant. And the wages paid to foreign teachers are usually pretty high compared to what they are paying (often much more qualified) local staff so I don't see why you took exception with what Besi said.

I agree that nothing will probably happen but unless you have a reason (ie they are not treating you well) I think it is a pretty crappy way to behave.

Oh man, so many Chinese schools exploit foreign teachers, please, feel free to exploit them back if you want

I have to side with Harry at #5 on this issue. He's 100% correct.

unfortunately #6, they are in the minority. I haven't seen one in four years in China.

Even Tsing Hua, allegedly the best in China, is corrupt.
