Backpacking in China is real easy and real safe. I just got back from a three week jaunt and I am 75 years of age.5
There's a lot to see in Beijing, and if you want to see things well instead of just breeze through, you should plan to spend longer. The 10 k hike is one of the most worthwhile things I have done in my life -- that takes one day. The Forbidden City and the Summer Palace each deserve a full day, and then you won't see everything. You can do them fast if you want, but why go all the way to China just to pop into these great sights, take a picture to prove you were there and then move on to the next item on your checklist? Five or six or seven days would be excellent.6

Kevin, have you been to the forbidden city recently? Much of it has been completely overhauled. If your idea of interesting is white museum walls with a glass case containing a replica of a musical instrument that was common a hundred years ago, then the forbidden city is heaven. But I was seriously disappointed in most of the buildings. I would say it's time that could be better spent seeing something more genuine and interesting."Hang your chemistry and electricity!
