backpacking through china

hey guys ,

just new to this site, looks wicked.

girlfriend and i plan to travel through china then into vietnam next june-2008 was looking for some tips and advice.hope you can help.hope to spend around 4weeks in china.

Rough plan so far......fly into beijing, stay for a few days see the sights and do a 10k trek of the wall.a few days enough? then head to xian, chendou and head to hong kong.i'm sure there is plenty to see and do in between.
would appreciate any advice on places to stop, hostels, travel info, costs.also if anyone has details of voluntary work with pandas that doesn't cost a small fortune.

checking things out on the net and reading travel guides but your personal experiences would be invaluable.

happy travels,scottish neil.

re voluntary work with pandas

Chengdu's probably a good option with Wolong and the Breeding Research Centre, but didn't see any vacancies being advertised. I understand it costs 1,000Y for a photo of you holding one, so you'll need an angle to jump ahead of the queue of 'volunteers' ahead of you.

: )

Backpacking in China is real easy and real safe. I just got back from a three week jaunt and I am 75 years of age.

Make sure you learn a few basic phrases and take a phrase book. Attitudes really change when you at least try.

Chiina is just full of hostels. Check "hostelworld.com"

If I can do it so can you!

There's a lot to see in Beijing, and if you want to see things well instead of just breeze through, you should plan to spend longer. The 10 k hike is one of the most worthwhile things I have done in my life -- that takes one day. The Forbidden City and the Summer Palace each deserve a full day, and then you won't see everything. You can do them fast if you want, but why go all the way to China just to pop into these great sights, take a picture to prove you were there and then move on to the next item on your checklist? Five or six or seven days would be excellent.

Neither deserves more than 90 minutes.

But the all day hike on the wall in june would be amazing.

Kevin, have you been to the forbidden city recently? Much of it has been completely overhauled. If your idea of interesting is white museum walls with a glass case containing a replica of a musical instrument that was common a hundred years ago, then the forbidden city is heaven. But I was seriously disappointed in most of the buildings. I would say it's time that could be better spent seeing something more genuine and interesting.

I was there on September 5th. That was five weeks ago.

If you spend only 90 minutes in the Forbidden City, you probably don't have time to get to the gardens at the back, or the numerous "palaces" (which are better described as rooms) at the north end of the complex. These are both genuine and interesting. The white walled rooms at the south end with musical instruments are only mildly interesting, I agree, but there is so much more. Not everyone will be interested in getting the audio guide and listening to it. For the many who do, however, following that around will take several hours. We didn't get to hear all of the mini-lectures on the audioguide because we ran out of time.

I just think it would be unfortunate if someone takes your advice literally, allocates only a couple of hours or less for the Forbidden City, and then has to rush off feeling that they have missed a lot. Most people I've spoken to find the Forbidden City to be well worth the better part of a day. I think that people planning trips should plan for that possibility. If they get there are it bores them, they can always take off early. The problem is that if they plan to do too much in one day and find than 90 minutes isn't enough time, then they will be disappointed.

Giving us more information about yourself would also be helpful to us when suggesting answers. Eg your sightseeing interests/preferences, your expected daily budget, points of entry/exit etc. You mentioned Hong Kong... are you flying from there to Vietnam, or entering Vietnam overland?
Cheers!
