Traveller cheque or just bank card and Mastercard??

Hey there,

Just a quick question-

I will be travelling around Thailand for one month in November and have no idea wheter to bring traveller cheques or just my atm card and mastercard??

I'd imagine there is a big fee on taking money out of ATM in foreign country, does anyone have any suggestions on how to save costs?

Many thanks for any advice

Amie

Just a suggestion and I don't know if this could work because I haven't been out there yet but I will probably need to have stuff sent to me in Thailand and I was thinking of speaking to someone at my Embassy to ask them if they could recieve it and keep it safe for me - might want to try that?

Don't the relevance between the OP and #1. Robbie, you will almost certainly be fine with just an ATM card as the machines are everywhere and well-maintained. The only reason to have TCs is in the event that you're card gets lost or stops working.

I'd take a small amount of cash in your own currency and in Thai Bht (Bht5000 is enough to get taxis and a room without using cards).

Thereafter rely on cards - take two with you and keep them in sepearate places so that if you loose one you are not completely stuck.

Call your bank/credit card company to let them know where you are going.

And don't let your cards out of sight.

When you get back from your holidays thoroughly check your statement for unauthorized usage.

I always keep a good record of when I use my card so that if there is any dispute I can hand that over as evidence that I am managing my card security.

The only reason I take some traveler's checks is that I am worried about something happening to the cards...stolen, broken, demagnitized, or some problem with the bank and acceptance.
Definitely call your bank and tell them you authorize charges from there, otherwise they may put a hold on it, thinking you have been the victim of phishing or theft. So I always carry a small amount of traveler's checks for security (maybe 1/5 to 1/4 of my total for the trip as a guestimate).
Have fun.

tengo billetes como de octava clase, pero asi viajo, contento de ir de viaje.......

Poster # 1: Receiving and keeping stuff at your embassy? If they are really polite they will tell you that they are not your shipping agent and storage facility. If they are rude they might just tell you to go fly a kite.

I have lost my ATM card in Thailand. I was very glad I took some TC's while I waited for a new card to come!
