China in June

My girlfriend and I will be traveling to Shanghai in June and I have a kind of strange question regarding our trip We'll only be in the country a month, so the standard tourist Visa should suit us perfectly. The only thing that gives me pause is that, since I write for a skateboard magazine I qualify as a member of the media, and I guess I'm technically a journalist. But, my only interest in China, insofar as my writing goes, is the giant 100,000 square foot SMP skatepark in Shanghai. I was hoping to do an article on China's burgeoning skate scene.

Is this something I should let them know, or would in be in my best interests to enter the country as a tourist and just do my work on the sly? If anyone could give me some advice I'd really appreciate it.

No, do not tell them.. Just travel and enjoy yourself and write about your experience.. Its a big hassle to get a J visa and you would need sponsorship.

I second No. 1. Absolutely do not tell them.
Especially since '08 is their Olympics year.

Also, don't mention that your are a journalist or work for the media in your visa application. Be a student. Waiter. Whatever. My experience wasn't a big deal, but it was a hassle: After putting that I was a journalist on my tourist visa application, they made me write a letter stating that I would not do any journalsim/media work while in China.

Have fun.

agree with number 2. Write something else in the occupation box. Something simple like waiter or office worker.

If you actually do end up getting imprisoned for six months, imagine the story you can write after that!
