credit cards

I am from the UK and my boyfriend and I are travelling to thailand for 3 months and then australia for at least a year, we plan to live and work in australia.
is it true that we will need a credit card to book hotel rooms etc? does anyone advise to get a credit card?
I am used to living with my debit card but maybe thats not good enough.

You'll need credit cards to book stuff online, like rooms in advance, cheap flights ..

It will also be your backup way of getting cash (if you loose the debit card for ex. - or if no ATM is available)

You also might need more money than your debit card can withdraw at one point (like medical costs or a flight back home) ..

I can't imagine going overseas without a credit card .. In fact I always have 2 debit cards and a visa card with me ..

it's perfectly possible to survive in Thailand without a credit card, though they do come in handy and as #1 says in an emergency they might be indispensable. But you're more likely to use one for booking flights online than getting accommodation. I think I've used mine about twice in maybe 250 nights in hotels/guesthouses in the past five years, to reserve rooms when I was making a late check in, and which both times I ended up paying in cash anyway. My first two trips I didn't have a credit card or ATM or anything with me at all except TC's and a small amount of cash and I had no problems at all.

The debit card should be just fine as long as it has a visa / mc logo on it. I use my debit card to book online all of the time. I have never taken my credit card overseas with me. I always use only my debit card. However, I do have the number available to me should I need it. I have always used cash for hotels.

Get a Credit card for that extra Section 75 protection. Make it one of these three;

Nationwide

Audi Card

Post Office Mastercard

The only cards without Foreign Exchange charges.

I would opt for the Nationwide card.

Not sure about the others 4# but you wont get charged for cash withdrawls with the Nationwide. I think the regular places charge around 5%.

You do know that there are not actually any Australians left in Australia. They are all over in the UK apart from the crew from Neighbors. Might get a bit lonely. Why not just head down to the local walkabout pub instead.

#7 I owe them $42. I waltzed off accidentally foregtting to pay for three nights once and didn't realise until I was halfway to Siem Reap.

you shouldn't be withdrawing anything with your credit card anyway - it's called a cash advance for a reason, i.e. it's a loan usually with high interest, not you getting out the money you actually have.

You debit card with a visa or mastercard logo should be fine unless you want to get a credit card to have extra protection for your purchases in case things go wrong. you don't have to use the "credit" on it. just pay in full on the due date, or set it up to have it automatically paid through you bank account. this way, you get 20-30 days with no interest as opposed to debit cards. not recommended if you're not good with your finances though.
