new traveller on a budget

Hi all,
I'm going to experience my first backpacking trip to vietnam and thailand in March for 4 weeks.
Questions.
1. what are the best places to visit in this amount of time?
2. is it possible to see these two countries in 4 weeks?
3. what route should I take?

Thinking about landing in Bangkok go straight to chaing mia and work my way down to phi phi,etc work my way around to vietnam and finish off at ko samui. May way off the mark, can anyone guide me the right way.

Thanks
John

I think with just 4 weeks, stick to one country. Or, rather than going to Vn., perhaps visit a bordering country w/ Thailand, like Cambodia or Lao.

imo, Thailand and Vietnam are both worth more than a month each.

You hurt my feelings...both of 'em!

4 weeks is a very tight schedule especially if you do not plan on flying everywhere. if you are intent on spending 4 weeks in both countries then i would recommend spending about 10 days in northern vietnam, maybe fly into Hanoi and spend a few days in Sapa - lovely mountain scenery, paddyfields, tribal villages etc... and maybe an over night trip in halong bay.
As for Thailand you will just have to decide what you want to do and realise you will have to leave a lot out. I have not been to Phi Phi but I have only heard good things about the place. You are close to Phuket in Phi Phi although if you are dreaming about a tropical beach paradise Phuket will disappoint - it is like Bangkok with a beach. very crowded and noisy. I personally thought that ko Pha Ngan and Ko Chang were the nicest islands - and i hated Samui and Phuket.
Chiang Mai is a nice relaxed city and Pai is worth a few days while you are in the area.
