Hong Kong is the best place to get a visa. I as offered 3 month double entry or 6 month multi (NZ passport). There may be issues with US passport in respect to getting longer visas. Extensions are a formality at any PSB.http://thewanderingant.com/travels/betel-nut.html

However, British passport holders do seem to be charged more in Hong Kong for a Chinese visa than in other places (for example Bangkok). Whether you can get the 6 month multi in Bangkok or the UK is another matter though.
