Welcome to TT. This is perhaps the top topic on all China travel forums. (You can use the search function of the China forum under "ATM" to get answers.)Always looking for new adventures, new cultures, interesting geography.

In Zhongdian you need to use the Agricultural Bank of China, rather than Bank of China (don't think there is one) for changing travellers cheques. They have ATMs as well. Didn't use either, so not sure how efficient they are. In Lijiang it took less than 5 minutes to cash trav. chqs (same in Guilin) at the bank but yes, on previous trips it has taken up to an hour (waiting 'only' 1/2 hr, processing transaction almost as long).7
Agricultural Bank of China gives a bit worse rates than BoC in other places, so you'd better change more money before. In other places you quoted there's Bank of China. and there are ATMs too. If you don't plan spending a fortune in each place my advice is to change your money in Kunming once for the whole trip and then eventually use ATMs for smaller amounts if you run out of RMB - changing money is quite time consuming in China (queues, paperwork).Tweak your wanderlust
