Restaurants Beijing & Shanghai

Hi!

My wife and I will shortly be visiting China. We were wondering if anyone could suggest good quality local (Chinese) restaurants in Shanghai and Beijing at which to eat?

Maximum price could be up to 350RMB per head (preferably less). We both like spicy food and can take the heat!

Thanks, Voldemar

I do not suggest Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant in Beijing, maybe try the other famous one that Frommer's always recommends (name escapes me now).

In Shanghai, we had a great meal at Laozhan (Old Station) across the street from the Xujiahui Cathedral. Even if you don't get the "train car" table at Laozhan, the food is still excellent.

in beijing, i would recommend DADONG roast duck restaurant. that's the place everyone goes now as it's better than quanjude.

the first night you get to beijing pick up a copy of That's Beijing, it has lists of restaurants. if you like Yunnan food, there are a few great Yunnan restaurants here. there are also a lot of great sichuan restaurants.

yunnan restaurant: Middle 8th, In & Out, South Silk Road.

sichuan restaurants: South Beauty

Modern Chinese Fusion: Green T House. (seems to impress a lot of visitors)

I enjoyed Da Dong (22 Donsishitiao, Doncheng District), in Beijing too. Their claim is that their roast duck technique minimizes fat on the duck. Best Peking duck I've had - delicious!

In Shanghai, I love dumplings at Din Tai Feng, located in Xintiandi. Crystal Jade nearby is also good for brunch dim-sum.

The Old Station restaurant mentioned in #2 has now closed for renovation, I think.
Some of my favourites in Shanghai are South Beauty and Yuga both at Super Brand Mall and with a view of the Bund (there are others but these 2 are my favourites), the Nanxiang xiaolongbao restaurant in Yuyuan Bazaar, Yuan Yuan on Huaihai Zhonglu/Xiangyang Beilu, People 6 and People 7 in the French Concession (VERY KEWL decor)... etc etc etc. Sorry, I can't give out too many secrets!
Cheers!

Beijing: BaGuoBuYi, Sichuan style. should meet your taste, with Sichuan face changing show.

350 RMB PER PERSON - that is my entire budget for 2 days when travelling! What do you get for that - apart from gold plated kuaizi?

What's the name of the Chinese restuarant located around Ritan Park (It may have been in the park itself)? It's popular with expats.

I found it: Xiheyaju. The food is great and so is the atmosphere. We spent around Y100/person I think.

a lot of the provincial representative office buildings in beijing (where the reps from each province have their offices in the capital) have respective restaurants on the first floor that are usuaully good. for example, the sichuan representative office has a good sichuan restaurant. most of these offices are located in the xizhimen area.
