hiring longtail boat phi phi

how much would one expect to pay to hire a longtail boat/snorkeling equipment for a trip to maya bay and surrounds for some snorkeling?
are there any companies running organized trips like this, or is it merely up to chartering your own boat from the longtail drivers on the beach?
thanks!

Organised trips tend to be either early until mid afternoon, or later until early evening. They differ slightly, but the one I know of includes Maya Bay, snorkelling at Viking Cave, a quick look at the swifts' nests, a stop at the monkey beach on Phi Phi Don, snorkelling off the rock near Haad Yao on Phi Phi Don, lunch at Bamboo Island, then snorkelling off the south-west of Phi Phi Don on the way back. That was something like 10am to 4pm. I think that's the early one and the later one includes staying on the boat for sunset.

I think this has been 450 baht the last 2 years when I've done it. You can book it at any number of places that have signs outside offering the tour.

It's possible to snorkel out to the rock near Haad Yao according to a friend who's an experienced swimmer. As far as hiring a longtail privately, I have no experience of this.

I have the same experience as somsip - it is a great boat trip, well worth it. Have a great time (by the way if you just walk around the village they advertise these trips everywhere - you'll have no problem booking one).

somsip, yes it is possible to swim out to the rock off Hat Yao but the current there can be very strong so would not recommend it to inexperienced swimmers. Safer to snorkel nearer to the middle of the beach, you may be lucky to see black tip reef sharks there too mid afternoon.
