Overland to Lhasa from Lijiang or Dali City

Hey all,

Two of us are looking to travel overland from either Lijiang, Dali City, Shangri-La or somewhere in this area to Lhasa sometime in late october. I don't know a whole lot about it, I've just been reading up on it in the Lonely Planet book. Anyone out there done this and have any good advice? Or anyone out there looking to do something similar that wants to join up and get in on a jeep together? Also from one of these places what kind of timeline will we be looking at until we get to Lhasa, and what are some ballpark costs for something like this?

Also after this we are planning on continuing on overland into Nepal and then through into India eventually ending up in New Dehli. Any ideas on costs and timelines for this trip?

I realize I'm looking for a lot of information in this post but any help would really be apreciated. Cheers.

Trevor

Hi, are you still looking for partners? I'm a solo guy and I'm interested in the Lijiang/Zhongdian-Lhasa trip but as for me it could only work with a starting date of 8th October or so.
Have you found any better than this: http://www.china-travel.nl/english/tibet.htm ?

Hi, I am nearly finished with planning this trip for about October 20 or some days later (starting in Deqin). I just wait for the final offer from a person I met last year in Lijiang (he´s from Singapore and organizes adventure tours for photographers). The drive from Deqin to Lhasa is 4 days. I am a German traveller with some experience in travelling and trekking in Yunnan. I am interested to find partners to share the cost. I am open for any modifications based on your ideas.

I did this trip in 2002, it took 7 days and cost us RMB9,500, I have a feeling it might cost quite a bitmore these days. You can ask tour companies in Lhasa about rates. Find travel partners using the notice boards at places like the Yak Hotel. There is an issue of travel permits for some of the areas you go through. You will need to discus that with the agency as it will affect the price of your tour.

Good Luck.

Methanshus & bennbenn,
will be ready to decide detailed travel dates early next week. Prefered travel time end of October; price p.P. should not exceed 500 US$.

Hi Trevor.

My wife and I are planning exactly the same trip as you and in similar dates as well: Yunnan-Lhasa-Katmandu-Dehli, starting on november 15-20. We have read many post here and we are getting very anxious by the amount of problems and misinformation regarding that precise journey. Probably we will end up going to Chengdu to get the TTP before Lhasa. From then on, however, we have no clue. Do you have new info? what are you planning to do?

bye and good luck!

Ricardo
