How to get to Khao Lak ??

Dear Everyone,
We are planning a week of snorkelling and sun in Thailand, and we were thinking or experiencing the Similan Islands. I don’t know if it’s possible to stay there, but in case it’s not, we will just stay in Khao Lak (we hope it’s a nice place). THE MATTER IS: How can we get to Khao Lak from Phuket airport?? Is there a bus from the airport without the need to go to Phuket (the town)?? We know we could rent a taxi, but we’re a bit worried it could be too expensive. Please share with us your experiences. Many Many thanks-TONY

It's not very far, about 80 km, and there are fairly frequent buses during daylight hours. Cost about 100 baht (less if not air conditioned). Just take the Thai Airways minibus to the bus stop on the main highway near the airport. Don't go all the way into Phuket city. Any bus with Takuapa on the front (#436), and the buses heading for Ranong at 10:00, 12:00 and 15:10 pass by Khao Lak(#430). Make sure to ask the driver if he's passing Khao Lak. Some buses to Ranong take another route. Even that's not so bad - just change bus in Phangnga town. The airport limo service charges 1500 baht.

I am not aware of any Ranong buses that don't go via Khao Lak, or Surat buses come to that. Only Krabi buses don't go through Khao Lak.

Kevin, you're right! In my addled brain I was thinking of the bus from Krabi to Khao Lak, which goes via Phang Nga. But don't at least some of the buses from Phuket to Surat Thani go through Phang Nga on the cut-off, what is it, 415?

Yes, they do. No idea though which ones and how somebody can see which bus going to Surat goes via Khao Lak and which not.

There is accomodation on the islands at the National Park headquarters, but you need to book well ahead.

There are tents and bungalows available on the Similans, also available on the Surin Islands. With local dive companies you can easily arrange diving while staying there. Reservations are suggested for the busiest times of the year, but a day or two ahead is all that's really required.

For a slightly less hectic trip from airport to Khao Lak, just contact a local travel agent or dive shop and get a taxi. You will spend less than an hour and get taken right where you need to go.

Khao Lak is a very nice place. Unless you want to party, you got the wrong town in that case. Jungles, diving, snorkeling, rafting, and more.

Ask the driver or bus lady when you stop the bus.
