Bangkok Airways is not a budget airline. In fact they style themselves as "Asia Boutique Airline." They're as safe as they all are. Not more or less.

Shortly after BKK Airways first began operations, in November 1990, it lost a DeHaviland Dash-8 turboprop landing in high winds and heavy rain at Koh Samui, all 38 on board were killed.

Wikipedia mentions this incident, I didn't find any reference to it anywhere else, but I remember it occurring, as my former girlfriend became their passenger service manager shortly thereafter. In 1991 I flew them to Koh Samui and Phnom Penh, without incident. Wikipedia does not mention any other accidents or incidents.

Yeah, well, that was 17 years ago. BKK doesn't fly Dash 8s any more as far as I know.

Despite the detractors, Orient Thai never had an accident in what must have been thousands of short-haul flights around Thaiand. You never know when your number's going to come up.

#8 - Indeed, although they were warned about lax safety standards in March and had a few close calls this year too.

I found the service on Bangkok Airways to be very good, when I was there in 2003, they had their own departure lounge at the Bangkok airport and it was quite comfortable. The landing in Phuket was the smoothest I have ever felt.

Hard work has killed many a good woman, so why should I take the chance.

I've flown Bangkok Air two times and found the airline to be excellent. I booked tickets on the internet at Internet cafes, wrote down my confirmation number, arrived at the airport, and flew to my destinations with no problems.

"I've flown Bangkok Air two times and found the airline to be excellent. I booked tickets on the internet at Internet cafes, wrote down my confirmation number, arrived at the airport, and flew to my destinations with no problems." - exactly my answer, they are a good airline.

just because there was this awful accident doesnt mean all thai / SE asian airlines are not to be trusted.

RE#2.
Some years ago there was a crash landing at Ko Samui , so presume that was Bangkok Airways too since they have exclusive use of that airport.

Many of the non budget airlines such as Thai or Garuda fly older aircraft than some of the 'budget' airlines such as Jetstar or Tiger. I flew to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific last week and the plane was on it's last legs. Having to pay for your beer on the flight isnt going to make any difference to pilot error or weather conditions.

If you can't beat em, delete em.

Yes, Kananga, always amazes me too that people confuse good service with air safety. You can be served by old goats on a brand new 777 or have a pretty young hostesss-thingy jiggle her tits at you on a kite that's held together with gaffer tape, and any combination of the above. None of it's any use when trying to land in challenging weather conditions.

They say it's not as bad as they say it is.

#8 If you're referring to the crash at Surat Thani on Dec. 11 1998, it was a Thai Airways A-310. Not Bangkok Airways,

I think that sometimes it makes a difference if you're flying domestically or internationally though. For example- ive flown several times with jetstar domestic and not only was the service poor, but the plane was on the verge of falling apart too. i have also flown internationally and service and aircraft/ pilot were fine if not good.

basically, you have to be really unlucky to fall out of the sky.
