What exactly is the Tibet entry permit?

Traveling from Kathmandu.

OK, so I know there's no point getting a Chinese visa here in the UK as it'll be automatically canceled when traveling to Tibet.

I also know I have to get a 'group' permit to travel into Tibet.

But what I'm unsure about it was exactly is the permit. Is it a normal Chinese visa with a special Tibet section on it?

My concern is, am I legally allowed to go into mainland China (I want to get to Chengdu on the train, then Kunming to get entry to Myanmar) with this permit as long as it is still within the days allocated to me?

I know there is the issue with the group pass and splitting etc. I'm really hoping to get my own 'group' visa. Does anyone know how likely this currently is / when is best to get one from?

Thanks for you help

Patrick

the "visa" into tibet isn't really a visa. its more like a permissive document given to you by the chinese authorities. getting a chinese visa is nearly impossible at the border. though it may seem illegal to enter the country, you are only allowed under special circumstances. if you want to visit china proper, it would be advisable to start there first unfortunately. there are a few approved companies that can arrange travel to tibet from china. you'll be safe to return to china afterwards. traveling in from nepal may pose a bit of a challenge document wise. there should be a tour company located in kathmandu that arranges trips there and yes, you can get a group visa as an individual. its weird but that's how it works apparently. you are only allowed in certain areas while in tibet as much of the region is shut off from outside influences.

i'd stay updated and visit the consular section of the chinese embassy in the UK or visit the travel section of the UK government's website. the US version updates it all the time, not sure about the UK.

happy travels!! visa situations are daunting no? :/

danger will only befall those ignorant enough to believe what they're told.

OK thanks triplehelix ... Visa scenarios are annoying and seemingly deliberately confusing!

But I'm still a bit confused... if I travel to Chengdu on my Tibet visa will I come a cropper?

My fallback plan is to return to KTM after Lhasa, get a Chinese visa there and fly to Chengdu.

I'd infinitely rather get the train though!

Thanks

What? Some confusion here, I think. Tibet is part of China, so you will need a Chinese visa to enter it. It won't be cancelled.

Everything in moderation, even moderation.

From every thing I've read, traveling from KTM to Tibet, it will be. You have to have a special Tibet permit insead of a Chinese visa.

This doesn't apply when traveling from mainland China though as far as I'm aware.

Well, yes. Chengdu (like Tibet) is in the People's Republic of China, so you just need a Chinese visa (which you can get in the UK before you leave).

The permit you need for Tibet is a little more complicated, and I'm afraid I don't know the best way to get one if you are entering from Nepal.

Everything in moderation, even moderation.

Sorry but the lonely planet book states that any Chinese visa I'll have in my passport will be nullified when I go into Tibet from Nepal, so there's no point getting one here in the UK.

You get something else (Tibet) permit when you enter from Nepal but I'm wondering where this actually let me go, i.e. into mainland China.

This is second hand but I understand you need to subsequently get a visa or travel document to go to China from Tibet if you come from Nepal. Vistet or Laosang seem to be the best on this..

Hi, You must have a Chinese Visa which is glued into your passport and takes up a whole page you should get this in the UK before you leave. The permit to get into Tibet never actually appears in your passport and is just a piece of paper and the Chinese will know if you do or do not have one. You will need both as #5 points out. You mention a group visa, dont ever travel through China with one of these as the whole group has to stay together through all chekc points. I think you are getting mixed up with the fact that you cannot go into Tibet as a single traveller. Gosh confusing. Just get a Chinese Visa and apply for the Tibet Permit at the same time BUT you must have an invitation to Tibet which your travel agent should be able to sort out. More confusion for you. Good luck

I appeciate taking the time to post #10 but I don't think that's right. The lonely planet guide to Tibet says that any Chinese visa I have in my passport will be cancelled in Kathmandu and I'll get a group visa instead.

So my question is, once i have this permit (presuming I have a group visa with just me on it) and I free to travel to Chnegdu and Kunming as long as I do it within the allocated 21/28 days?

Thanks #9, any moer confirmation on this?

Thank you

Patrick
