Another tired visa question (12 months?)

The Chinese visa application has a section where one may choose single or multiple entry, and length of visa, one of the options being a multiple entry valid for 12 months; is that 12 months in the country? That seems too good to be true, if it isn't, does it cost more, because why would anyone elect to have less time if they need only choose the longer option? Or is this a question of it being valid to use for 12 months, but once used lasts only a month or 3 months or something? Thanks.

As I understand it the validity refers to the time time span in which you can use the multiple visa.
I think it is a one month initial stay with the ability to extend 2 more months by applying once inside China.
Once 3 months is up I think it is difficult to extend again and then you have to leave the country and do the whole procedure again.

Other rules may apply for non -tourist category visas.

Due to a reciprocal agreement between the US and China, Americans should now be entitled to a one-year multiple-entry visa for their $100.

Whether you'll actually get one may be another matter, but you should certainly ask for the one-year visa.

The visa should set out the permitted stay on each visit, which may be 30, 60, or 90 days, depending on the precise phase of the moon when you apply for the visa.

These changes should have taken effect August 1 when visa fees for Americans were increased.

These thing change depending on where you apply, the above-noted phases of the moon, the alignment of your birth sign and the rules as they interpret them at the time. If you are applying for anything other than the standard visa, then attaching a letter on reasons for longer stays or longer valid period might help. Best reason for what you get: Predestination.

This is what I was told.
