Mt Kailash Trek (From Lhasa to Kashgar)

Hi,

Anyone with any idea that is it true that you must have both a driver and a guide for the trip to Mt Kailash? I understand that a permit is must for travelling to that area of Tibet. But can it be done with just the driver (who will also acts a the guide)??

I'm planning a trip this coming Oct, in about 3 weeks' time, to Mt Kailash, on 4x4 for this overland trip, which includes a 3-days Mount Kailash Kora. So, bascially it's an overland trip from Lhasa - Shigatse - Lhatse - Darchen - Zanda - DaHongLuTan - YeCheng - Kashgar. Still short of people to share the 4x4.

Currently I have enough people to squeeze into one 4x4, but 5pax for a 4x4 is really too much for such a long journey. Hence is hoping to find at least one more pax so that we could have 2 4x4 for this trip. However, I'm having problem finding people to join in such short notice. Would there be anyone who is interested in this trip, and anyone who knows how we can get around with the permit and driver/guide issue??

Many thanks in advance!!!

We did this one last year as far as Ali, and when we raised the matter with the folks at the Banak Shol, they did not even blink; they understood the issues involved with taking a guide, and had no qualms agreeing to us going with just the driver.

I believe the situation may only change if 'something happens' like the EBC protest, so I would expect that you can do this at present. The last thing most westerners want is some chinese guy, maybe a party guy, taking up jeep space at their expense! Things may still be different for trips to EBC, note, but others here may give you 'on the ground' advice for the present situation. Good luck, you are gonna like the Aksai-Kunlun stretch, nothing like it in the world. BTW, our driver spoke about 8 words of English and we got on just fine..

Hi,
As far as I know, Tibetin permit is needed now. Because of this issue, there are no more drivers from Tibet yet now. So, please double check for more lates info. Don't miss the Taklimakan desert when you are in Kashgar for treking. It is best time and best thing to do some days treking. Don't forget you warm clothes. abdulcafe@gmail.com

Hi bulbul2

Thanks. I did heard something about the permit issue from my agent... Permit is always needed for this stretch of Tibet. Heard it's something about the govt stepping up security... I wonder what's happening... Hope everything will be resolved...
You said there's no more drivers from Tibet... Are you at Kashgar now, and saw that there's no more drivers coming in??

Cheers
