which beach?

Hi,

We are going to thailand for holidays and will be spending 5/6 days on the beach. The thing is we cannot decide where to go between Ko Phan Nang or Railay beach. We want to go to place thats laid back with a nice beach but not overally developed; but we want to stay somewhere nice, kinda luxurious but maybe not too expensive. Maybe 4* as apposed to 5*.

Any suggestions on where to go between the 2 places and he names of some resorts also would be handy.

Thaks a mil…..

KOH SAMED ISLAND. Lima Coco resort if you want a luxerious resort! if not TOP of the line, then i suggest ao vong dern resort! The island is a perfect size! Everything you need is on it, and it is not overpopulated like many of the others. Another great thing about it: You are only three hours away from BKK.

Unfortunately Railay is crowded if you are going anytime between Nov and the end of March and pretty much overdeveloped.
Phangan has some nice beaches meeting your specification. Thong Nai Pan is one of the best. Panviman is a very classy place - their one night rate is a bit over the top, but last time I looked they had a good multi-night rate. Some other midrangers have appeared on Thong Nai Pan recently - but I'm not real sure of their names (I stay downmarket).
A small point - Phangan is likely to be wetter than Railay between mid November and early January.
I have written more info on Railay, Phangan, Thong Nai Pan and a sublink to Panviman in the second link below.

Not much in it. Anecdotally there may be more chance of one of the rare prolonged wet periods on the Phangan side. But that would not sway my choice.

I would suggest you go to Koh Phangan and stay at Plaas which is on Thaan Sadet beach.

This beach is smaller and similar but less crowded then Thong Noi and yai pan.

The view from Plaas bungalows are awesome, bungalows are great with tiled toilets but no hot water. The view and setting is ultra romantic.
The price is 400 baht per bungalow.
Havent found cheaper better accomodation on an island for that price.

If u decide to stay at a place with hot water etc definately do visit thsi lovely beach and enjoy the view from the cliff where Plaas is situated.

Food is over priced on Thaan sadet beach as they make up in food when there accomodations are so cheap.

If anyone reading this has found similar accomodation on any island in thailand please do let me know as most bungalows in this price range are old and smelly.
