China Visa for US passport

I went to China embassy website and it looks like they are charging a straight $100 for US citizen (for tourist visa) no matter if you apply for 2 months or 12 months. Do all of you apply for the 12 months multiple entry?

Does this mean I could stay the entire 12 months in China?

That makes me wonder... Does a trip to Hong Kong/Macau require a multi-entry visa, since you actually go through immigration when leaving/re-entering the mainalnd?

(I had a residence permit, so I never thought much about tourist visas.)

Either double or multi-entry, yes.

Chicago consulate, for $100 I recently got a one year, multiple entry, 90 day each visit. Of course, I had my Chinese girlfriend with me to speak directly to the consulate lady. I guess it helped. BTW OP: all L visa entries are governed by a length of stay...normally 30 days per entry.

If the limit is 30 days but my visa is multi-entry, could I cross the border to one of the neighboring countries and then come back to stay for another 30 days?

Speaking of (L) VISAS, where's the best place to extend them while I'm in China?

I've read sometime ago (a couple of months) that there are certain provinces/areas that you can renew the L visas easily. Also, how long does it take for the agency to renew the visa (waiting period)?

Thanks in advance!

Leshan is a good idea. I think Dunhuang and smaller cities are good too for fast turn-around times. Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai are usually quite rigid about the 4-day waiting time.

We applied for, and got, a 60 day L visa no problems. Just had to show an itinerary covering those days. Made one up travelling half way around China. Of course, we didnt intend going anywhere near most of them.
