Tibet overland in November

Hi all!

I will be travelling from Katmandu to Lasha overland in the beggining of November. Is this still possible despite the low temperatures? From lasha I intend to take the train to Chengdu (this probably by end of November).

Please give me some advice on the difficulties of crossing Tibet overland in November. It will be much appreciated. Any other comments on this route are welcome. I still have to sort out the arrengements to get the permit (I'll do this in Katmandu).

Thanks a lot and nice trip to all.

obviously itll be cold, but otherwise no harder than any other time. the whole snow thing aint a reality unless youre way up high, tho the friendship pass may have problems on the nepalese side.
visas will be a bigger pain in the arse.

It should be okay, I met some cyclist who cycled from Lhasa to Kathmandu in December last year!

re: stoognik's post and statement " the whole snow thing aint a reality unless youre way up high, tho the friendship pass may have problems on the nepalese side.

I would disagree with both these statements. In November the weather is generally very stable in Nepal and you are very unlikly to have issues with the road on the Nepal side.

You will also NOT have issues with visas. (unless something weird happens) Your Chinese visa is applied for in Ktm along with your Tibet permit. You have to use an agency in Ktm for this service. Once you find the agency and decide on which tour you want it is a simple process with a 2 or 3 day or so wait.

November is a great time to travel in Tibet. Highly recommended. (but buy a big fat down jacket in Lhasa for those cold nights!)

Getting train tickets to Chengdu should be easy in November as it is the end of the tourist season. (there are always rumours of th etrain stopping for maintenence in winter but it hasn't happened yet (for any real length of time)
