surfing in cuba?
There is a group of us travelling to Cuba in November and really really want to get some surfing in. I have heard that there is windsurfing, but not actual surfing...is this true? Has anyone surfed in Cuba? Where woudl we go? Who should we talk to? What's the best and safest way to go about seeking out a surf school maybe in Cuba?thank you,
foxyboxerchick

Surfing sucks in Cuba. No infrastructure or schools either. That said, these guys are a gas. If you're in the neighbourhood, ask for Felix. Everyone knows him.
Cheers,

So, #3 - I see that you are a "new" Poster here, advertising some casas for your frens. Other than advertising your casas, do you have a problem with people who know something about surfing in Cuba, posting?4
Okay, so we're all beginner surfers (only done it maybe 6 times in our lives)....so size of waves is better on the smaller side anyways....it looks like the waves (from the pictures) are pretty small, but surfable....yeah, I just made up a word! It's more a matter of trying to surf in Cuba....even if the waves kind of suck!
So, it IS something you can do.....I appreciate the info!
If you have any more great, cool, fun advice for our trip, please let me know! We're all adventurous....staying at a resort because of a friends' wedding, but don't want to stay there and be beach bums all day...we're very active...any great ideas?
We're staying at the Sol Palmeras Beach Resort, Varadero....
thanks again....this website is fantastic! (as are you guys!!!)
hugs,

#8 - flying/travelling with surfboards is common in the surfing world, but you make a good point, as the foxyboxerchick & friends' greatest challenge other than finding waves, will be finding a surfboard(s) if they do not bring their own - and carting around a surfboard in Cuba will be even greater challenge - a challenge I would not undertake in Cuba even if I was still surfing. :-)9
Your chances to catch “surfable” waves in Varadero during November will be limited to how the weather could be around Florida Straits. If not hurricane or a tropical storm around be sure that not even small waves will be in your scenario. Although November is now within the hurricane season if you are coming after Nov. 15th then your chances will be even less. Windsurfing on the contrary will be easy. Please do not go through the hassle of bringing surfboards. Easy and plenty to find in Varadero and Santa Martha (little town close to Varadero). Just ask any staffers at the Hotel or better those working with the entertainer’s team (Grupo Animacion).
Think about a day trip or an overnight trip to Havana as part of the action you say you like. Being just a couple of hours away from the Capital City makes it not only a must but a doable & easy tour.
