Alternative music scene in Shanghai

I am interested to know to what extent there is an alternative music / rock scene in Shanghai. By this I mean:

1) Venues that feature local (or visiting) indie bands / performers.
2) Bars / clubs that play "proper" indie / rock music - western or local (as opposed to featuring filipino cover bands).

Are there magazine listings for places like this (as in e.g. TimeOut)? How else can I locate them?

Melting Pot at 288,Tai Kang Lu (off Sinan lu or Maoming lu)

It has mainly Chinese bands playing every night. A friends band (western) plays blues on Sunday Nights and there is a jam night every Monday.
Quote:
"Bar 288, The Melting Pot is located on Tai Kang Lu, known as the Art-Street of Shanghai. Every night from 9:30 you can enjoy live-music from around the world and meet people from around the world. Bar 288 really lives up to its name The Melting Pot, it has an open stage and is the favorite place for musicians to jam."

Also 4 Live at 8 Jian Guo Zhong Lu near Chong Qing Nan Lu. It always has great local/western/mixed bands playing as well as a lot of dj/hip hop events (such as the very famous, best party in Shanghai, 'Bananas' parties). They usually post their upcoming events on Smart Shanghai.

You will NEVER find a Filipino covers band playing at these bars, they are not expensive to drink at (especially 4 live) and Melting Pot never has door charges (that I have come across).
Enjoy!

Shanghai's music scene is always changing, faster than any major city I've seen. Venues open and close every weekend. SmartShanghai.com is probably the best place (in English) to find what's happening. Also look out for independent party crews like Antidote that host live music mixed with DJs , in Shanghai and other China cities. There's also about 5 English magazines in town to check listings.
