Hi,

I have been trying to get the same information. The deal is that all the tour agents in Chengdu that sell the big return package deals are booking up all the tickets in advance. Then a day or so before the train departs you can enter a lottery to get one that wasnt bought. But to enter you need to pay a deposit and get your permit sorted with them!

If anyone has any information about the situation in Chengdu or any other city in China where it may be easier to get tickets please please tell us!

Chengdu has been difficult to get either soft or hard sleepers from as far back as April.
#2, where did you hear the story of the lottery?? Sounds implausible.

Besides, you come up with this story for a first post.

I called Sims Guesthouse in Chengdu and they said this is now the process. Anywhere else I asked just said they dont sell train tickets anymore as they cant buy them.

The two of us did the 8 day trip to Lhasa with a Toyota Landcruiser starting in Zhongdian (shangrila).

We organized it in Kunming at a tour operator office at Camellia Hotel.
So we didn't have to worry about getting the (four) needed permits.

I still have the address of Mr. Chen's Tour, who was organizing car, driver and permits.
But it may be outdated by now, because it was February 2005 when we did the trip.

Anyway this kind of trip is no budget option.
