Beijing and Shanghai to Hanoi or Bangkok

Hi,

My boyfriend and I are arriving into Beijing in early October (after doing the trans-sib) and we plan to carry on down to SE Asia. We would really like to see Shanghai en route but I am having trouble finding how to get to Hanoi or Bangkok from there on a budget! If anyone could give me any advice it would be really appreciated - also a suggested time frame?

Thanks so much.

You can sometimes get decent price directplane tickets from Shanghai to Bangkok but that is peak travel time in China.

Alternatively you could fly or train (30 hours plus!) to Nanning in Guangxi Province (or stop off in Guilin area for a nice diversion) and carry on overland to Vietnam from there.
