If the one free day was during a weekend, then I would do Panjiayuan Market in the morning and maybe a hutong tour in the afternoon.More Confucian commentary can be found at VirtualTourist.com Confucius Homepage

Peking University and TsingHua University. Peking Duck for dinner. and China National War Museum.4
Panjiayuan is a weekend market, so on Wednesday maybe you could combine a hutong tour with the Lama Temple (Yonghegong).More Confucian commentary can be found at VirtualTourist.com Confucius Homepage

If you are interested in art, you could go out to Dashanzi, or take in many of the art galleries in town. Dashanzi is out near the airport.Cheers, Paul.

Is the temple of heaven the same as the Lhama temple? if not I'd go see the lhama temple as well. that will fill a few hours. there is nothing special to see at peking university and tsinghua university, it is more of an attraction for chinese tourists but they are close to the summer palace so when you are there you might as well visit them if you have the time.8
Lama temple is good; two great vegetarian restaurants nearby. Underground City is a throwback to the Sino-Soviet conflict in the 1970s, lunch on Hou Hai at a table looking at Chinese peddle boat themselves like in Central Park. If you are at all interested in green tea or tea in general, the world's largest collection of tea shops is in Beijing on one street, Malian Dao. Very competitive prices on tea pots, tea makers, tea sets and, of course, tea itself.Always looking for new adventures, new cultures, interesting geography.
