Four *short* days in Beijing

My girlfriend and I are have a short vacation and are going to Beijing on a package tour. We've already got plans to see:

Tian An Men Square, Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven, and the Yashiu Market.

Our package tour includes one free day and we're looking for recommendations on what else Beijing offers that we should
spend our limited time seeing.

If you had one day in Beijing and you'd already been to the places I mention above, where would you go? See? Do?

Many thanks,
Martin

If the one free day was during a weekend, then I would do Panjiayuan Market in the morning and maybe a hutong tour in the afternoon.

Peking University and TsingHua University. Peking Duck for dinner. and China National War Museum.

Just for your reference. Knowing a country, first, take a close look on the youth of this country. and the war museum gives you an idea on how Chinese see his history and country. After you visit the war museum you know "the making of a country called China". now its time for PLA ( people's liberation Army 80 years anniversary. There has a special show.

Panjiayuan is a weekend market, so on Wednesday maybe you could combine a hutong tour with the Lama Temple (Yonghegong).

I would skip a tour of the hutongs to simply walk around Qian Hai and Hou Hai. See the hutongs as you walk. Eat lunch somewhere along the way.

If you are interested in art, you could go out to Dashanzi, or take in many of the art galleries in town. Dashanzi is out near the airport.

For something different, you could take a stroll around Liulichang. Lots of calligraphy shops there.

Or take a canal tour. A lot of tourists don't even know about the canals.

Cheers, Paul.

Is the temple of heaven the same as the Lhama temple? if not I'd go see the lhama temple as well. that will fill a few hours. there is nothing special to see at peking university and tsinghua university, it is more of an attraction for chinese tourists but they are close to the summer palace so when you are there you might as well visit them if you have the time.

Lama temple is good; two great vegetarian restaurants nearby. Underground City is a throwback to the Sino-Soviet conflict in the 1970s, lunch on Hou Hai at a table looking at Chinese peddle boat themselves like in Central Park. If you are at all interested in green tea or tea in general, the world's largest collection of tea shops is in Beijing on one street, Malian Dao. Very competitive prices on tea pots, tea makers, tea sets and, of course, tea itself.

Always looking for new adventures, new cultures, interesting geography.
