Malaria in Koh Chang?

Is there much of a risk of malaria for tourists in Koh Chang (and surrounding islands)?

The general consensus seems to be that most tourists don't take anti-malarials when going to Koh Chang for a week or two. Is that right?

There is no specialised travel medicine clinic where I live and the nurses at my local medical practice don't seem to be experts on travel medicine so I thought I'd ask on here.

But you do have internet access, and I'd recommend you have a look at the websites for Centers for Disease Control, World Health Organisation, and Thai Travel Clinic. Personal opinions are helpful, but there's no substitute for a real doctor and/or bonafide medical advice.

there's some old guidebook out there that claims Koh Chang is malarial. I've lived in Thailand 7 years now, and have not heard one case of malaria from Chang. (Dengue fever is another matter.) I suppose if Steve252 were still around, he'd dredge up some isolated incident of malaria on Chang or Samet.

You hurt my feelings...both of 'em!

#2 Huh? Just showing the way to some useful links. Unwarranted flame ;-(
I've been to Ko Chang many times too and also never took meds, but it's good to review what the "experts" think.
Reduce Defcon level to green ;-)

I TOTALLY agree with Just Bob. People who ask serious medical questions on this forum should have their heads examined. The internet is a wonderful source for medical information....this website isn't!

At BNH Hospital on convent road in Bangkok, they have "International Travel Medicine Clinic" which has Malaria medicine advice.

Check it here http://www.bnhhospital.com/medical.php?menu=16&lang=eng

You'll be fine - I've survived 4 years on KC without catching Malaria and never heard of anyone who has.

Spent 2 weeks in Oct 06 & 2 weeks in Dec/Jan 06-7 in Koh Chang without any meds. Now, I maybe foolish - but I've never met anyone who got malaria in Koh Chang (or anywhere else in LOS for that matter). My friend did contract Dengue fever in Chiang Mai April 07 though..., If you're really worried then Boots will sell you anti-malarial pills in Thailand over the counter - so just pick them up when you get here ,

have a great time on Koh Chang - it is a wonderful place,

Ying.

Malaria preventatives are cheaply and readily available in Thailand (doxycycline is your cheapest option, and about as effective as the expensive stuff). But as others have said, there's almost no malaria in Thailand, including on Ko Chang. Malaria Dengue is a big deal, but there's no dengue preventatives anyway. Just try to avoid mosquito bites.

Ko Chang and Ko Kood (Kut) are subject to outbreaks of malaria altho Ko Mak is malaria free . The last fatal case of malaria on Ko Chang I know about was a Thai soldier , over the last 10 years or so several foreigners have died from cerebral malaria on Ko Chang. I have met plenty of locals on Ko Chang who freely admit malaria occurs , including a Thai govt doctor.
