Urgent!!! Can I use another travel agency?

Travelling to Tibet seems definitely harder than I expected.
We're trying to get the permit in Chengdu but apparently you don't get any permit...as some of you already said. I'm fine with that but ...Here they tell you you must book any tour out of Lhasa with a certain agency, the one that arranged your "permit" But that would mean paying far too much. So...
The question is...once you're in Lhasa would it be possible to book a trip with any other agency and get a group together to share the price of the car, etc...?? Or would we definitely have to book the tour with the travel agency we've been told??
I have only a few hours to arrange this so I would really appreciate any info you could give me.
Thanx a lot...agaaaaain!!!
Safe travels...

I believe that you will be able to do so although I don't know it for certain. This has been asked and answered many times on this board so do a search and you will find the answer.

good luck!

When they say you dont get a permit, I think they mean you wont actually see it.
Have you been to Sims and asked them the situation??

I've emailed Sim's about getting into Lhasa by air and they just refer you to thier website, maybe in person is better. I'm also trying to find this out. (I have a posted a similiar question) Lets hear from people that have arrived in Lhasa and gone on to arrange a tour without having to produce the TTB, which it seems you never do get to see/feel/hold/have.

Ummm, Sims gave us a copy of the permit when we used them to go by train from Chengdu to Lhasa back in April. And this was before the troubles started.

According to thier website it says unless you book a whole tour with them, you don't get the permit. They have 3 different options for travel into Lhasa and it seems that if you just book the flight/train and permit, you don't get the permit. I may have misread the information so it is always best to email/talk directly with them.

I also emailed the FIT Banak Shol agency in Lhasa asking about booking a tour with them if I don't have a copy of the permit and it didn't seem to be a problem. They said they could arrange the permit as well. It may be worth emailing them. If you hear anyhting different, let us know!!!
