Mongolia With Only a Transit Visa??

A friend and I have bought train tickets on the Trans-Siberian from Moscow through to Beijing. However we're now thinking it'd be a shame not to stay in Mongolia. We were wondering firstly how much a train from Mongolia on to Beijing would roughly cost, and secondly we only have transit visas, do you reckon we'd get away without having tourist visas, and if not could we convert them to tourist visas easily enough??

Your transit visa is only good for a limited number of days. If you overstay your visa you will probably have problems, but it might be possible to change your visa or get a new visa. There is a Mongolian consulate in Irkutsk and another in Ulan Ude, Russia. Visa processing usually takes about 5 days but can be obtained in less time for a higher price.

It will immediately be evident to the border guards that you have overstayed.

Train from UB to Beijing is about 100-120 USD per person in kupe/ 4 person compartment. Train travels once of twice a week depending upon the time of year. Whether there will be tickets available will depend upon when you are traveling. I usually recommend that people contact a guest house or travel agency in UB to arrange these tickets as there are so few options. OTOH it is possible to take a local daily train to the border, cross and catch a local train in China to Beijing.

Since I have taken the time to answer your question, it would be nice if you took the time to respond as to whether the information was helpful.
