My brother and I did Xinjiang in 11 days in 2003, but that didn't include time in Xi'an. We went to Urumqi, Turpan, Kashgar and Yarkand/Shache. We flew Xi'an-Urumqi and Urumqi-Kashgar and back to save time.

Others will have different opinions, OP, but I thought Urumqi was only useful as a place to fly into and out of.

Some have said that the Museum is nice, but when I was there it was being renovated and I only saw a little of it.

There's a poster on here who has a bar in Urumqi called the Fubar. That might be his TT handle. If you like bars, you might like visiting there.

Hi,
Fly to Urumqi and then Kashgar in a same day. It will be a connected E-ticket to Kashgar. To visit Idkah Mosque, Handcraft walking street, Old town, Apak Huja Momb, Sunday Market. Two days to Karakul Lake and Tashkurgan. This is will be a wonderful part to your trip, as my experience. 5 days trip to Turpan from Kashgar. On trip you could visit the Yingsar(which is famous for Uyghur knife), Yarken( very old town on the silk road), Kargilik(where you can go to Tibet). Hoten( Famous for carpet, silk and Jade), Niya( Last town in the Desert). Cross the Taklimakan Desert(which is Second biggest shifting desert in the world), Kucha( old city on the silk road), Kural (developing city lake Urumqi), Turpan(2nights). Urumqi to home by flight. abdulcafe@gmail.com

I just came back from 2 weeks in Xinjiang province, plus a couple more days tacked on at the end for Gansu province. Here's my itinerary suggestion:

Xi'an (1+ day)
Xi'an -- Dunhuang train (1 day): K591 (1056--0931) 22h35min
Dunhuang (1 day)
Dunhuang -- Turpan train (overnight): T216/T217 (2016--0822) 12h06min
Turpan (2 days)
Turpan -- Urumqi bus: around 3h
Urumqi -- Kashgar train (1 day): N886/N887 (1209--1104) 22h05min
Karakoram Highway, Karakul Lake, Tashkurgan (2 days)
Kashgar (2 days) --> must have at least Sunday

Cheers!

Forgot to add, you should also budget 1 day in Urumqi to see the new Xinjiang Autonomous Region Museum as well as the Erdaoqiao Bazaar.
Cheers!
